You are right that the new style credit style ones have been around for longer than 10 years but the old paper ones which I first got when I passed my test in the 80s are still perfectly legal and you really don't need to change them unless you move, get points or change your name - or get to 70 too I supposed unless you're one of those people who have to renew more often eg my SIL who is diabetic.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Why don't you have to renew the photo too? I'm guessing in another 10 years time I'm not gonna look the same. I have to id people for the sale of ciggys and booze all the time and you'd be amazed what a difference a few years make...and especially a change of hair style.
I have to renew mine every 3 years anyway cos of diabetes

?
I thought the whole idea was to update the card BECAUSE the photo was old!?
I also thought that some people with mistakes on their cards were ok because the DVLA had a record but claimed to have 'no records' of a minority of people ever passing their test(s) who had mistakes and they were made to 're-test'.<*}}}>< Jonathan ><{{{*>

When my son renewed his, his photo was rejected. So had to pay to have another one done. My 3 points were also written in a childish hand writing but still have my old licence.A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows

Not really, given that your driving licence can be used as a form of identification in EU countries it is reasonable & prudent to have a reasonably "up to date" pictureOriginally posted by ladylottie View PostIs this yet another money spinner? He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

But if you're in an EU country, you'll have your passport with you. Do we really need both?Originally posted by bearded bloke View PostNot really, given that your driving licence can be used as a form of identification in EU countries it is reasonable & prudent to have a reasonably "up to date" pictureI was feeling part of the scenery

So was mine, I did it myself (you're allowed to, within their very stringent rules). I was very cross at having to pay 20 for a new one, esp. as I wasn't even driving at that time, it was just used for ID purposesOriginally posted by dominic10 View PostWhen my son renewed his, his photo was rejected. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

You can't renew the paper ones which is why you were forced to change yours but if, like me, you've not moved you can stick with what you have and not pay up, I too think it's a money making exercise and have no problems with using my passport as ID.Originally posted by ladylottie View PostI thought we all had to give up our paper licences. I had to in 2006 when I moved house. I've just checked on the pink photo card and mine expires next March.
Is this yet another money spinner? Looks that way to me.

Yes & no (see below)Originally posted by Seahorse View PostBut if you're in an EU country, you'll have your passport with you. Do we really need both?
I find having to take a passport everywhere with me (when abroad) a pain in the bum,it is far more convenient to have the (much smaller) picture licence in my pocket to use as IDOriginally posted by Alison View PostI too think it's a money making exercise and have no problems with using my passport as ID.He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame
