Heat we are both pretty much ok with ... their winters are like our summers
Food/wine.........love ....... Gastronomes paradise
Local markets ........love .. Funchal farmers market is the biggest & most famous,but take time to see its little brother at Santa Cruz
Like walking .......local flora and fauna.... All the hotels organise Levada walks & there are great public & private gardens
not so keen on museums and churches ... very few museums,church visiting is very much optional
Like beaches but would get bored if it was all the time ...... There are a few black sand beaches on the island & several pebble covered ones,but if Mr.Bin's wants a golden sand beach then you can take a high speed ferry to Porto Santo,it's where the local's go for their holidays
I don't do swimming but OH does and he likes snorkelling ..... not sure on snorkeling but AFAIF all the hotels have their own pool some even have private access beach.
Would like to feel safe especially if I went for a wander on my own .... never had a single problem & have never heard of anyone who has (male or female),a bonus is that the locals actually like the English,timeshare people can be a tad annoying but if you keep walking & say nothing they soon give up & go away

I loved Jamaica.
Warm, friendly people, extremely beautiful, all-inclusive, plenty of organised trips, beaches, bars, swimming, snorkelling, glass-bottom boats, all excellent.
Looooooong (no smoking! ) flight, lots of 'beggars,' didn't feel safe enough to leave organised trips, but fine whilst on all the excursions.

I love Catalunya (where our holiday house is), plenty of swimming beaches (in various degrees of popularity) small towns (as well as a few larger ones), hotels on the edges of towns, markets galore, and inlnd, some lovely (if strenuous) walking, with wildflowers galore, and (if you chose the right spot) cave paintings and other items of curiosity. Museums exist, mostly 'specialist' ones. We've never found the time to visit them, but there is a museum of ceramics and pottery, as well as others I can't call to mind just now.
There are coast paths which 'join up' a lot of the quieter beaches. You won't find locals on a beach outside the tourist season, they put on extra jumpers in September, just as it is getting cool enough for me!
For one town with a great market, a fishing port, nice tapas-bars, and the big hotels at the edges, within easy reach of loads of beaches (including their own) try L'Ametlla Mar (it's where we go for market and tapas as often as we can afford).
Never been in a hotel, but they look OK, if you like hotels...Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.Comment

I've never been there and it appeals with the walks and the scenery etc ......The more I've read about it the more I fancy it. I've "done " lots of the greek islands, majorca, various places in france and Kenya and this just for some reason seems different.

Friend of my Mum has been to Madeira loooooads of times - she loves it. She's a cultured kind of person, into gardens and cooking, so there must be sommat in that!
Makes a mean Madeira CAAAAAAKE too!
