Plant I.D Please.

I've been given this spiky plant cutting to grow, but I haven't a clue what it is . It's very spiky has thick glossy leaves and smells...well...like an illegal plant . I'd love to know what it is, I've looked in all my gardening books but can't find anything.

Your mission if you chose to take it is to...

1. Identify it.
2. Let me know how and where to grow it.
3. If it's legal (round here it could be anything ).

I was thinking peony but the leaves are too thick and spiky.

it's legal so you don't have to worry about that. No idea what it actually is though.

I'd be very suprised if it's not Corsican Helebore, very spiky leaves. Grows about 1 mtr high and maks a big clump. Green flowers in early spring and grows in shade

Yeah, definitely not Mary Jane.
But don't ask me what it actually is, the only thing I'd say is that with leaves like those it comes from somewhere hot and bothered with browsers e.g. goats. I'd say the Mediterranean.

I'd say you have a winner with Corsican Helebore, but as you can't eat it, it holds little interest for me. Well done Roitelet.

It is a hellebore - they come in spiky, plain and cheese and onion.

If it's a 3 pronged leaf it's mire than likely hellebore of some description. You'll soon know come Christmas time :-)
