Feeling rather smug but dreading the phone call

so just watched baby hospital which made me sob (bad idea) and the teariness has followed through today.

I can't watch programmes like this, always need huge box of tissues (or whole loo roll ), heck there are some adverts that make me cry

My MinL never buys anything, not even cards, for our four. She loves, however, to come around here and tell our children exactly what she has bought and how much she's spent on her other four grandchildren. My children put up with this and, to their credit, don't whine about being left out - probably because my mum makes sure they don't dip out, she loves to spoil her grandchildren.

Tammy, you can't watch sad baby/children things after having kids. It'll always break your heart, and make you run out of tissues but never sympathy.

People who feel the need to critise and lecture about things that don't matter (or to be honest often even if things that do matter) need to take a long hard look at themselves. They're not any better and anyway I was always brought up that you should NEVER expect somebody to give a present but be very pleased when they did. Idiots.

Lol, I have one of those too and I STILL forget birthdays (probably something to do with the fact that I keep it in the kitchen drawer and forget it's there)

The only reason it works for me Reet is because it's at work and runs alongside my electronic diary. If I'm on leave and forget to bring it home, I'm done for!

Thanks all. Feeling a lot better. Told my friend today how I was feeling and she said why watch such a sad program Tammy - you cry when you cant do your shoe laces up! I know she is right, I only watch those sort of things as I still harbour a dream to one day be a doula - doubt that will happen though as an emotional wreck wouldnt be of much support lol! Kids off tomorrow due to the strikes but at least I wont have the school run (dash ) in the morning - gonna have a chillax with my four (much better than 2.4 ) kids

They seem so perfect to me - lovely big house in the suburbs, 2.4 well 2 children...I feel they are always quite judgemental of me...

If your SIL was perfect, she would have the grace and good manners not to notice you temporarily forgot the date of her child's birthday.
I'm sure the child never noticed - can't say I've noticed that pre-school children COUNT how many presents they get, they are too busy playing with the packaging it all came in!

I'm the same Tammy, but I figure I'm going to cry anyway so it doesn't make much difference if it's a sad programme or not - it's usually someone else's tears that set me off, doesn't matter if it's tears of pain or happiness - I'll always join in!
(Never fancied being a doula, but I have daughters and was priviliged to be at the birth of my first grandchild so in some ways it's happened anyway!)

Hmmm methnks people who make punitive "should have"..."ought to" demands and guilt trips dressed as gentle reminders are maybe not as in control as they would like people to think! Yes birthdays are vital to 4 year olds, but most in control mums know to say "oh dont worry you know how scatty/skint/busy aunty so and so is, she will be really upset shes forgotten". IMO if someone makes you feel bad deliberately you should have a good hard anylize of how it feels and why...you will probably find that person feels like that most of the time in their life because someone is peppering them with the same "you are useless" messages.

Have you ever watched that American programme 'Extreme Makeover'? That never fails to reduce me to a snivelly mess! The tv peeps do lots of amazing stuff, but what really does it for me is the community spirit it all engenders. I've had to stop watching when DD puts it on (occasionally the BH can give up the telly trols without a panic attack or feeling bereft) because I just know I'll be in bits. Happy bits, but still bits, and I get laughed at.
