Oh, for a book....

I've looked at the first few pages of The Help and it's written in the first person and the dialect of a black servant. Not sure I can read that, but I'll give it a try. The Room is written in a similar vein through the eyes of a 5-year old. Not sure about that either!

I very rarely read fiction (last time I did, it was "The woman in the 5th" by Douglas Kennedy, and that explained again to me why I dont read it)

I am a big Douglas Kennedy fan but i have to admit that this book really did let him down, ending far to ridiculous! However i have LOVED all of his other books that i've read, i also love Paullina Simons' books and A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard by James Frey.

Hmm... you get used to it - Colour Purple was also written from the 1st person, I think it gave it more impact. Give it a go

Just finished 'The Lovely Bones' - I enjoyed it very much but felt I would have liked to have seen justice done, however I guess the book reflects real life in this respect...(trying to be cryptic so as not to give the game away )
I would recommend it.

I had them for my Birthday last year - spent nearly 4 hours in the bath with one, one night - couldn't put them down either.

It is weird, isn't it, how someone's "life-changing-book-they-couldn't-put-down-fantastic-read" is someone else's "lose-it-under-the-bed-can't-be-bothered-to-finish-it-bore-fest"!
Just goes to prove that we are a complex and varied species,eh?

Absolutely Creemteez. Different strokes for different folks, I tried and tried but failed to read Birdsong by Seb Faulks. But others on here eulogise on its magnificence. Doesnt mean its not a good book, just didnt do it for me. I am almost a disciple for Endurance by Caroline Alexander, but the majority of people wouldnt find it interesting at all. Good job we're all different or the book market would be very small.

I must have got to about 10 pages past the ridiculous bit, then thought I must have missed a page, so went back and tried again. Pfff

I used to make myself finish books, even if I was losing interest, but I don't do that any more, life's too short. If it gets boring, I bin it and start another one.

I don't think I've ever read the same book twice (with the exception of Cloud Atlas, but that was because it took me three attempts to read it).

I always recommend early Jasper FForde books, specifically the Thursday Next series - The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots - not so keen on his other works, but still a good escapism read.

Loved Cloud Atlas, Black Swan Green and number9dream by David Mitchell.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is another book I would read again.

I also wanted to tell you that I thought I couldn't read "Room". I was wrong. Very, very wrong. I have to force myself to put it down.

On the subject of re-reading books, I have many "old friends" who I like to revisit.
I;d love to get hold of a copy of "Legacy" by Susan Kay. It's an historical novel about the life of Elisabeth I and I literally read my copy original to pieces!
Time for a mooch on Amazon...

Finished The Help today. Took a day's leave and did nothing till I'd read it, just couldn't put it down. Would recommend it highly.
