The problems are many, not helped by the antiquated systems of law and house purchase here in France.
The house is paid cash, no mortgage and she doesnt have about 85k spare to pay him off, there arent many of us that do.
The house is in both of their names, so if he doesnt want to sell he doesnt have to.
She can prove that she has paid everything, house purchase and all living costs over the 4 years they were together in the house. If he has taken legal advice (either professional or Jean Claude who lives next door) he will probably be aware that she can collect all the money from the house sale, as it was only her that contributed. If thats the case, then he just wont sell, just to be spiteful.
He has told the notaire that he couldnt come yesterday but is free any day next week. Mme P is sure that he is just going to do the same thing again next week, and again and again.
The only real solution we have is that we sell my place and go and live in hers, so we dont have to sell but she doesnt want to because of too many bad memories in the place, which I can understand.

She was in tears most of last night, more of frustration than anything else, and its just horrible to see.

Ah well, at least its sunny so I can work in the garden again.

Its not really in a rentable state Incy, the people that are buying it want to do what Mme P and her ex had plans to do which was basically rip it to bits and rebuild not quite from scratch but not far from it.
As for getting him off the deeds, he would have to sign something, and as I understand it, he cant be forced to sign anything under French law.
Bit tiresome all in all.
I suggested to her last night that the potential buyers rent it at a nominal sum until a solution is found one way or the other, with all rentals paid being taken off the purchase price, but the problem with that is if he doesnt ever sell, she will have collected minimal rent but the house will still belong to the pair of them.

A man like that will be up to no good, somewhere. Find out what he has done wrong that you could make him suffer consequences for, and use that as leverage.
Or failing that, find out what he wants or needs, and see if you can either thwart his ability to get it - good karma - or offer it to him, in order to obtain his co-operation.

obviously stupid as well as mean - if he blocks the sale by being a tw*t he's stopping himself getting half of the profit too.

I think a trip to a solicitor is required if your lovely lady hasn't already done so. My friend lived with her ex for 13 years and they split up. she had supported his life style, he staid at home, she went to work, paid bills & brought all the food, got all the debt. he paid the mortgage. when they spilt she had massive debt and he wouldn't give her any money so she got a rite laid on the house, so when he sold it went into a solicitors pot and no one could spend it until an agreement had been reached. Perhaps your lady can do something like this. He would get a payment but much smaller as she should be able prove with bank statements where all the money came from......

Well, he's succeeded.
Living in such a small community, everyone knows everything about everyones business. The couple buying the house have been very sensible and done what I would have done, they've asked about in the village to see whats going on. Someone has told them of what her ex is up to, and this morning Mme P received an email saying that as there is every chance this is going to drag on and on, they are pulling out of the sale.
Words cant express my anger, and to see her in the state she's in currently is very difficult for me to deal with.

well, if she doesn't need the money from the house sale, and i mean, it's not necessary for her to live, but would be useful as a savings thing, I'd be a complete git myself and ask someone with bulldozers to come and raze it to the ground, because obviously, because he hadn't contributed to the upkeep of the place, it was in far too bad a condition, and a danger to anyone who went near it.
or another method, I'd sell anything in it or on it, including windows, roof tiles etc, and leave the walls standing.

A mysterious letter to the 'man' pointing out he's stopping himself from getting any profit might help him stop being an idiot, but if they can't sell what about letting it instead? it's probably something Mdm P can do without him being involved and she will have nice pin money out of it, or at least pay the mortgage if there is one.
