I can understand it when beach fishing with large bait &/or heavy weight combined with pendulum casting,I am probably deluding here but I only ever needed an "overhead thump" to get to the fish

My own version of the pendulum is sensational, often leading to a loss of tackle, sore thumb and a bad back all in one mis-timed easy sweep!

A gentle lob to catch fish....those were the days I bet!! lol
