I have yet to see the program but the destruction and rape of the marine environment via ridiculous legislation and industrial fishing is a far more important issue than Hugh's thing about factory chickens. I hope this campaign has the impact it deserves.
From watching that, I don't think eating different fish really makes any difference. They catch indiscriminately therefore what does it matter what we buy/eat really?
They need to change the law before any change can happen.
True, I guess.. but eating line caught non-main stream fish has surely got to be more sustainable? It's a shame we as consumers can't really do "much".

Well yes, one fisherman (I think) said if the disgard was lambs, slaughtered and left at the road side they'd be outrage and protests.. which is totally right - what you don't see and all that.
Living nowhere near the sea, we were amazed by the waste, absolutely shocking, sickening really.
The next two nights should give (hopefully) a good balanced view of the situation.

I'm not a not a bog fish eater, as I dont like it, .
What does bog fish taste of then ? ,,,,,,,,,sorry , getting my coat
I was totally shocked by all that dead fish being thrown back , in fact I got quite upset over the ridiculous waste of it all..........
I'd never really thought all this quota stuff before and assumed that fish were sorted as soon as they came out and were still alive.Shows how little I know.
Full of praise for those fisherman who came back near to shore to discard ......
How the hell is that system meant to increase fish stocks.........

The system is supposed to deter fishermen from catching the 'wrong' fish, but the policy makers haven't quite grasped that you often can't chose what ends up in the nets.
It was good to see the enormous skate swim off into the depths, hopefully having learned to avoid nets, but very few fish survive the time from the net closing in (so less water flowing over the gills) to the sorting benches!
First thing needed is a ban on discarding... ANYTHING ... once it is dead. If they want to control what is landed as commercial, then let the unintended catch be sold for making fishmeal (low price so they fishermen will avoid it if they can) and stop the 'Industrial fishing' for sandeels etc, which SHOULD be to food of the seabirds and the big cod!
The current policy hits the smaller boats, AND the fish stocks, but is much kinder on the 'big business' fisheries (a familiar song in other areas???)

I didn't watch the programme but surely the better thing to do is to try and make sure only the right fish is caught? Line fishing/pole fishing and then make fishing sustainable for fishermen?
It's a shame about the waste the but quotas exist so that fish stocks are kept at a sustainable level.
To add to that, most of the UK fishing industry is gone now anyway - have you been to (what was) Hull fish docks recently? Can you honestly say you have a fishmonger near you? (if you do, you are VERY lucky!)
Considering we are an island, we should be catching/buying/eating more fish (NB I will add sustanable ones) not less.
Its a sad state of affairs.

You're quite right about line caught fish, however, can you imagine how much the fish would cost if it were all caught in this manner? I try to buy British line caught, but I'm not fussy as to which type of fish it is.
The quotas are a joke, you do need to watch the programme to fully understand how wrong the quotas are. Basically any fish caught over the quota (of which there are literally tonnes everyday) are chucked back in the sea. DEAD. No one eats it, it doesn't add to the fish stocks, it's dead.
The fishermen should only be allowed a set amount of days fishing per month/year and they should be allowed to land anything they catch (I feel). This would prevent over-fishing but also mean that fish are not killed without purpose.

Surely the reason the UK fishing industry is gone, is because of the blimmin quotas!
There is absolutely no point in chucking back a dead fish , it doesn't benefit anybody ( except p'haps the crabs) so obviously this quota thing is all wrong and a different system needs to be worked out........
