I was terrified when we first moved here because up to then OH had always done the continental driving because he is such a terrible passenger. The thought of driving on the "wrong" side of the road scared me silly (and I am Scarey!)
One day, I had to do it - no choice, can't really remember why. I got lost a couple of times

You just reminded me, Drove all the way to Italy and back three four years ago. When driving from Rome to Monaco, realised as we had left Genoa, that the sea was on the wrong side of the car. There was a definite lack of road signs for Monaco as it was in a different country and we had no sat nav at the time and took pot luck at a roundabout.. That was a real hoot.

Not doing that again for a while though. It's strangely comforting how there are lots of people on here who have the same problem as me, I thought I was the only one as everyone I know is a fearless driver who just goes for it.

The combination of not passing your test till you're 30 and then not driving properly til 2 years later probably doesn't help.

I used all the tips with having phone, breaking journeys into small bits and all sorts to help me along. You lot are a gem, you know?

It terrifies me too...even if I'm driving to an unfamiliar part of Ipswich I get tense about which lane I should be in.
When I met up with Tammy and Kirsty last year I was so worried about the drive(most of it was dual carriageway and I hate them as much as most hate motorways...I usually find a lorry going at a reasonable speed and just sit behind it for the duration)...I first got lost at the first roundabout,approx ten minutes away,found myself in a Sainsbury's carpark and asked a chap directions...when he saw I still looked baffled he offered to change his normal route home so I could follow him as far as the last turn I needed to make.....he then dared to go as fast as 75 miles an hour
But I made it....even if it did take me nearly twice as long as Tammy to get there(despite having a lot less of a distance to travel)

I'm not worried about getting lost (unless it makes me late for something) - I'm quite happy to bike off into the countryside with a map and a flask
I did once drive onto the M25 the wrong way round, and wondered why it was taking me so long to get to where I was going (it's a circle, duh)

I can't use the Circle Line tube - 80% of the time I'll go west instead of east

My sister never attempted to drive until her husband left her, by which time she was at least 45, possibly 50 (I've lost track a bit!!). For the first year or so, she couldn't afford a car, she got a cheap Scooter (I don't think it was actually a Lambretta, but same sort of idea), she also didn't need to have actually passed her test to drive it (this was before the CBT came in). Eventually she managed to pass her test and get a cheap old car. Now nothing stops her!

I just had a cuppa with my mate, she passed her test as an adult. She won't drive north of here to Guildford, and I don't like driving down to porstmouth (it goes into 6 blooming lanes!) So we swap whoever is driving for where we want to go

Well done BK! Nothing's going to stop you now - go girl! I have a friend who will not "do" roundabouts. She plans every journey with such care to avoid them. She ends up driving miles out of her way!

I got signed off today actually. 8 physio appointments for a shoulder/neck pain, don't envy my job.

But I'm getting lots of practise

OH also just told me sheepishly that he avoided right turns for 2 years until he improved. At least I managed today.

I am wondering how on earth people manage to pass their driving tests if they can't do roundabouts or right turns etc?!

me - I couldn't reverse round a corner if there was a million quid waiting round the bend for me! (too much female brain - I have to physically turn maps around to read them too!)

Beggars belief doesn't it but it does depend on where you take your test - did mine in Peterborough so didn't have to do a hill start as that would have meant going into the multi storey car park
