We both have small families; one sibling each, so Christmad hasn't ever been too expensive. However, finding a decent present, that the recipient would like is becoming increasingly difficult. We now have a 'no present' rule, but that never works, as we all buy something. Usually it's just a bottle of the person's favourite tipple/nosh, but I think it's good to give something.

I bought my sis in law a plaster cast kit thing for making a keepsake of the bump and some lovely body products (safe for use in pregnancy) to slather over her bump.

Why not get them a gift voucher for a hairdo or a facial after they have had their babies rather than concentrate on a gift for the baby.
New mum will probably need a little pampering rather more than the new arrival.

Oxfam Unlimited is the place to go for those peeps who have everything. You can give school books, goats, seeds, watering systems etc etc to third world countries in the name of your relative/friend. You can dedicate one or more trees in a particular wood with the Woodland Trust. I'm sure many other charities provide similar opportunities - sponsoring dolphins, orang utans, pandas, tigers and so on. Far better than spending hard-earned money on something which will not be appreciated.
