They look great Tattieman! I even phoned your company up as I wanted to order some, guess what, TATTIES ... And I had some questions answered by a really nice lady. Who was really helpful. I wanted to support (semi)local business, y'see, rather than the big chain garden centres?

That is very pleasing to hear. What varieties were you after?

It was Sharpes Express, Home Guard and some other one which I can't remember - I actually changed my mind on that one though.

The videos on your site are ever so helpful by the way, they really are. I planted some tatties in four bags back in July. Got them free on Tesco points from Thompson & Morgan. Well, the instructions that came with them were woefully inadequate for a complete novice like me and I did everything wrong: put way too much soil in the bags (cause the instructions said put a foot of soil in a two foot high bag so then the shaws were totally top heavy), didn't earth them up, feed them or water them correctly.

They didn't do very well at all and ended up in a bit of a mess after a bad gale one night, but I was well chuffed to find a video on your site on how to grow tatties in bags - I've bookmarked it for next year.

I know you get what you pay for, but it did annoy me a bit that those tatties from T&M, well they didn't even tell you what variety they were never mind how to look after them properly!! Well, more fool me, I should have done more research at the time obviously.

Can't wait to get more growing (in bags AND in the ground) next year though. This was the first year I've ever grown anything and the Sharpes Express I dug up were absolutely out of this world ... I'll be gutted to go back to supermarket tatties when these run out!

I've got a bone to pick with you tattieman! You told me last year that once I'd grown tatties in bags I would never grow them any other way!

Well I grew half in bags filled with a fibrous loam and half in my allotment soil.
The ones I grew in the allotment soil far surpassed the ones in bags. The ones in bags never went short of water and were never overwatered but they just didn't perform half as well. They were in used fertiliser bags turned inside out with slits in the bottom. They were filled with a JI type of compost with extra peat added and given BFB at planting time with the same added to the shallow trench below them.

The varieties were Kestrel 2nd early and Winston early (these were particularily crap in bags AND soil)

I had a massive crop from the soil grown Kestrel though!

Undeterred I shall try a meagre ammount in bags next year but the bulk will be soil grown!

Looks like I had better run for cover
I find the small polypots are great. No slug damage and I can just use them as I need them out of the bag.

It might sound silly but the smaller bags seem to do better than large bags which have twice as much soil/compost in.

Growing in bags does require alot of attention as they can easily dry out or look moist on the top and be bone dry at the bottom where the roots are.

I just find the potatoes in bags are easier to manage when it comes to harvest and to be honest I already have a fair amount planted in soil

I started some Swift off in bags 2 weeks ago but there is no sign of anything yet.

Nice to hear from you again, tattieman. Why are you planting potatoes today?

I've just ordered mine for next year (hopefully won't have the same problems as last year when they were taken in by next door, no card left and no knock on door from next door, leading me to complain they'd not been delivered - oops!) including a trial of some purple ones which while I'm not convinced about, OH wants to try so will give a few a go. Grow all mine in the ground, more hassle to dig up but far less work the rest of the time .

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

This year we grew taters in a tyre wall. Pretty good results (would have been better if the tyre wall wasn't newly established, had some problems withsoil getting down into the lower tyres, so green taters).
The variety was Wilja, because I reckoned a second early was our best bet, and Wilja was one we knew was reliable.

Rocketron I just wanted to see if it is possible to have a fresh supply of potatoes all year round. I had a few spare tubers of Swift and thought I might as well plant them.
I did a video about it in my youtube videos.

Alison I remember that incident. I think your neighbour really wanted to keep them

Hilary second earlies can be really flexible and provide a very good crop if left to grow on for slightly longer but they can lose their flavour abit.

Back to my ISP problems. I find that if I view the vegging out section and then the general chat section followed by clicking on this thread it takes me about 6 minutes to get this far. Once I am on this thread and do a reply then it is back to normal speed wise. Any ideas what that means?

Sorry tattieman, I have absolutely nooooo idea

Have you spoken to TalkTalk to ask them why this happens? Is it the advertising, or something we might be able to find a solution to?

There's a moral in there somewhere Tattieman. Something along the lines of not chit chatting!
