Changing IP.

When you do,does it affect things like forums/Facebook etc.
I know I'll still be able to access them(I'm not totally thick),but will we need to inform them of a new Email addy?

Are you talking about changing internet provider or changing your IP (Internet Protocol) address. If you change your email address it would be wise to change forums settings to your new email address unless you still have access to the old mailbox or the "old" email account.

I thought IP was just Internet Provider...not heard of the other.

We're switching from AOL to Sky...so I assume won't get to keep the AOL address which is what we used to set up all accounts we have.
So is it easy enough to change these settings?

IP is internet protocol, ISP is Internet Service provider (geeks like acronyms) , most of them are quite straight forward just a case of finding the relevant settings and inputting the new address, some sites may have a wizard and others like this will just have a field to type into.

You shouldn't have to do anything with the hotmail account

According to AOL you dont need to have an account to get a free email address.

I assume AOL email is web based,ie you can simply access it from any pc.If so it appears you need to do nothing

Im currently with Sky as my ISP but i use a hotmail account (free) for email,that way when i change ISP i dont need a new email address

Your isp is your internet service provider as already mentioned.
When you change isp's, they;ll give you new e-mail addresses, new passwords etc.
In most cases, your old isp provider will stop your old e-mail address from working or you accessing it.

For forums etc, you can leave your log-in as your original e-mail address, but you won't receive any e-mails from there if you can't get into your account. It's best to change them just in case you lose your password or forget it for example.

Hotmail/gmail/web-based mail are not isp's, and you will always [ha!] be able to access those e-mail addresses, so no need to change any settings on any forums with those e-mail addresses.

Your IP address is the gateway you access the internet through, [ a series of numbers like 192.22.34.1267] and will change with your provider/new ISP, but only a few of the evil ones are banned on forums etc, you shouldn't need to worry at all if your ISP is reputable.

Thats not quite correct, a lot of ISP offer web based emails (typically IMAP or in BT case Outlook Web Access) so if you change providers then their web based emails access will also be lost.

I was just trying for the difference between web-based e-mail providers that don't act as isp's. My bad, should have explained properly.

I changed from AOL to BT a while back and I've kept the old AOL email address. I just have it bookmarked and check it every so often (TBH it's more or less all spam...) You automatically keep it.
