My dad had he lived would be 100 years old today, sadly he died on 24th February 1961 aged just 51 years. Today I will drink a toast in his memory. I dont really remember much about him except he loved gardening, his favourite flowers being Roses and Dahlias as well as lots of others. Sadly I cannot get to the cemetry today with the icy conditions, ( my roads and around the cemetry 6 miles away ).

How lovely you have remembered his 100th!
We had a party for my grandpa's 100th although he'd died many years earlier. I think it was the last time so many members of the family got together!
Tis 12 yrs until my own fathers 100th- he died at 56 and he too loved his garden- used to whistle to himself in his greenhouse bless him.
Happy memories Jackie"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

What a fantastic idea. I'll have to check when my grandparents were born, I know the family would love to celebrate their birthdays and it's always nice to find a different occassion to celebrate.Current Executive Board Members at Ollietopia Inc:

My father died on aFriday Jan 8th 1999.
My daughter was born on a Friday Jan 9th 1970.
Her other grandad died on a Friday 10th Jan 1991
Coincidence or plain weired. Her birthday is in between the deaths of her two grandads, all on Fridays 8th,9th and 10th of Januarry, just different years.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

what a lovely idea Jackie, my dad's 100th birthday would have been later this year, he died 11 years ago now but he is still often in my mind. I wish I had my allotment before he died, he would have loved my asparagus! I think we will have a family get together on his birthday to remember him together.

After looking into it she realised that almost exactly 10 years later, her youngest sister, Debbie, had been born.
She asked her mum, "Did Debbie remind you of Penelope when she was born?", to which she replied, "Every time I look at her".
I can't think of that story without getting a lump in my throat. If she had survived my mum wouldn't have been the oldest sibling and nothing would have turned out the same, she would have a totally different personality and I probably wouldn't even exist.
Your comment made me think of that.Current Executive Board Members at Ollietopia Inc:

(((Hugs))) Jackie, hope the memories keep you warm today. If my dad had still been alive, he would have been 96, which shocks me somehow - I can't imagine having really elderly parents (he was 68 when he died, mum was 78).
It is quite uncanny how often a birth follows a death in a family, often around the same date/time of year. When my twins were born, my OH had just lost both his dad and, just weeks before the boys were born, his Grandma. It was almost as my boys were 'replacing' the lost family members. Then 3 and a half years later my daughter was born, 3 days after the first anniversary of my Mums death. Spooky, but lovely at the same time.Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.

My great niece was born 5 days before the first anniversary of my mum passing, it took the edge off the first year and we looked forward instead of back.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache
