Definitely gloves for all except the most delicate and cleanest of operations!
We used to have a cat and know from bitter experience of lfower gardenign the dubious joy of coming into contact with something you'd rather not have! (only did it the once though)

I've just discovered my glove: it's as thin as a washing-up glove so you can feel what you're doing when weeding or transplanting, but it's longer lasting. (nettles will still sting you through the cotton back though)

I don't mind dirty hands, and my nails are non-existent anyway, but I am getting really bad painful skin splits around my thumbs this year from the soil.

I wear these for jobs that need a lightweight glove, or for warmth in the winter when doing a job I wouldn't normally wear gloves for;

They're skin tight, and I find I still have a fair amount of 'feel' when using them. Other than that, I wear the famous old green 'roseproof' (supposedly!) rubber-dipped ones, that I can slip on and off as required.

Most of the gardens I visit, have cat and dog mess to contend with, and I am sensitive to stings, so I tend to wear gloves most of the time. At home, though, I don't wear gloves, coz I know what's about!

I have lovely nails, but they are false, and if I break/lose one, I just stick another on!

No gloves for me when transplanting or planting etc. as never found anything I can get on with. I just use a nice handcream and never forget to use sunblock on the backs of my hands! I wear these for anything else Lilac Suede Gloves from National Trust

Don't have any gloves but when faced with a particularily vicious clump of nettles I wanted to reek my revenge on by making nettle tea, I had to improvise.
I had an old pair of wellies which were cracked and let in water. The only cutting implement I had was a pair of tin snips so I snipped a hand size panel out the side of them.
Wrap the wellie panel around the nettle stem and pull! Fine until another stem which is joined to it comes and wraps itself around your wrist. Anyway, retribution is mine and the nettle tea is steeping away nicely!

I use them now,didn't for a couple of years and my hands were always black and my nails too. I have to wear them in work, and managed to get some out-of-use ones.
I do forget sometimes.


I have a few other pairs, some heavy duty ones, and some wooly ones with a grip on the palm side.

oooo..i was just thinking about gloves as weeding nettle patch yesterday. I hate wearing gloves, I have to wear them all day at work if in the lab so coming home and slipping something else on isn't nice. I hate wearing shoes too (don't like thingscvering my feet).

Will have a look at a few of those to see if I can get along with them for weeding stuff like brambles and nettles.

I only wear gloves when moving heavy things like lugging big bags of compost etc or pruning in my garden. Otherwise can't be doing with them, they just seem to get in the way,my hands during the growing months always have that not quite clean look about them but in my job they are always covered in something whether it is glitter, glue, or more unmentionable things so don't worry about it too much. Early Years and gardening are both 'hands on' so I reackon I have the hands that match my job and life style and that is fine by me.

Ooooh, I nearly forgot - one of my customers gave me a tip, last week, about avoiding nettle stings. Cover your hands with talcuum powder! I forgot to ask if it was before or after, but she said it works!

They ommitted to tell you you have to add water and plaster of Paris with it, and spread it on 1/2 inch thick!

I do generally wear thin latex gloves for weeding, and things like filling pots and seed trays, especially at the moment as I have a wound on my finger I'm trying to keep clean. Dealing with nettles, brambles etc I wear thick gloves, contemplating getting a pair of gauntlets. Why is it gloves fall down and sleeves fall up to leave a nice area of exposed flesh when you're yanking out nettles?

I have problems finding gloves small enough as I have pretty small hands and always seem to have at least 1/2 inch or so 'spare' at the end of my fingers. I do use them for heavy duty stuff, but can't for the more delicate jobs, or fine weeding.
