Cheap way of cleaning lambskin rug?

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but does anyone have any good ways of cleaning an old, but in excellent condition, fur rug? I dont want to spend much. Can I stick it in the washing machine on a cool cycle, after all it is wool, just in its purest form!?

I stuck one in the washing machine, line dried it and then tumble dried it for a bit to make it fluffy again. Don't think they will ever go back to being as lovely as when they first come out of the shop - but at least I know its clean!!

One word of caution though - can be really heavy when wet so make sure your washing machine can cope with it!!!

I used to have a special lanolin shampoo for the lambskin both boys used as babies.

As a student i once did that with grotty curtains from student digs. I came out covered in paisley pattens.

Don't laugh....my mum tells me this is the best way of cleaning wool rugs... Wait for some thick snow, then lay rug on top and give it a good bash from the wrong side with a carpet beater!

I used to have sheepskin rugs on my hardwood floors DDL.
I never washed them.
As required, take them outside, hang them up. batter them with a carpet beater, brush like crazy with a stiff brush - brand new rugs.

Sorry, mine were actually goatskin rugs - maybe there's a difference.
Gave up with them in the end because of the contant moulting.
But had about 15 years of gorgeous wear from them.
