We were having a garden party on Saturday for my in-law's 50th Wedding Anniversary, and I'd already agreed to make loads of salads for the buffet when I thought to myself...'no one has mentioned a cake - I'll make one for them'.
Now I don't do things by halves, and I'd bought this 3D cake tin in the shape of a steam train (FIL is an enthusiast) ages ago, but had had no opportunity to use it. Here are the results...

Baking the cake was the easy bit - the sugar paste icing and piping took hours and hours. I've never really done anything like it before, so it was a bit mad of me really. Still, at least no one knew I was doing it, so if it had been a disaster it could have gone in the bin without anyone being any the wiser
.
But she loved it, and FIL only just gave me time to put it on the table before he gave me a huge hug!! He was a bit teary eyed too which was sooo sweet. 'Ruby' is the name of his own model steam train BTW.
