Baked a cake for my in-law's 50th Anniversary

We were having a garden party on Saturday for my in-law's 50th Wedding Anniversary, and I'd already agreed to make loads of salads for the buffet when I thought to myself...'no one has mentioned a cake - I'll make one for them'.

Now I don't do things by halves, and I'd bought this 3D cake tin in the shape of a steam train (FIL is an enthusiast) ages ago, but had had no opportunity to use it. Here are the results...

Thank you! Baking the cake was the easy bit - the sugar paste icing and piping took hours and hours. I've never really done anything like it before, so it was a bit mad of me really. Still, at least no one knew I was doing it, so if it had been a disaster it could have gone in the bin without anyone being any the wiser .

MIL walked in at the wrong moment and got a sneak preview! But she loved it, and FIL only just gave me time to put it on the table before he gave me a huge hug!! He was a bit teary eyed too which was sooo sweet. 'Ruby' is the name of his own model steam train BTW.

They wouldn't cut it either, I had to lift the train part off for them so they could keep it - don't know what they intend to do with it, its got cake up the middle!!

That looks amazing! Well done for getting the icing on - I had to do a cake for my neighbour's 60th birthday and i wimped out on the icing! Modelled lots of different flowers in left-over icing and marzipan instead

My OH has threatened to sell the cake tin, but I've got lots of different shaped cookie cutters to make iced bicuits with, a la Peggy Porschen - She's a cake decorating goddess!

That is fantastic I paid �25 each for my daughters and sons special birthday cakes and she said if it was for anyone else they would have been �30 each. So well done you.
