I'm dead excited about a product/system we've developed with one of our sister companies that allows plants (limited types) to be grown up a wall in a "soilless" fashion.

It's all dead clever - and uses recycled materials to help lower it's carbon impact. Helps reduce solar gain too.

You can even grow edibles (salad leaves etc) on it.

To be honest, I've done chuff all regarding the development - the company that created the system contacted me over a year ago and we discussed it (we make the supports that allow you to fix it back to the wall/structure).

I then passed it into our technical team for the development phase, but we recently submitted it to the CPA (Construction Products Association) Innovations award, and we've made it into the publication - they won't say in what capacity yet.

Quite a bit of interest in it already - Sainsburys are quite keen on it.

The product/system is currently on display at the BRE in Watford - which HRH Prince Charlie opened.

The idea of living walls is nothing new - it's more the method that this one is manufactured that's cool. Uses plastic destined for landfil and a pump system that drip feeds the plants, along with nutrients, and then collects and recirculates the run-off water back up.

It's on permanent display (4 years) at BRE - which hosted Insite09 (BRE: INSITE09: Welcome to INSITE09 and the BRE Innovation Park) recently.

We also exhibited it at Ecobuild in February of this year. It's received a great deal of interest at both.

Trouble is, housing/construction is a little slow at the moment - according to a report I received yesterday new starts (private housing) are expected to be 70,000, which is the lowest number since 1924.

they're fantastic ideas, I think if I had the chance, I'd jump at it, just like I'd jump at living wallpaper.

I really like the idea of recycling the water too, so much better than continually using a new supply.
