Dog Cjewing Mail!

Not sure Nick - Dexter is a mongrel! his "aunty margaret" was taking him out one day an an australian chap came up and said "great dingo!" which he looks like, sort of - with big sticky up ears! (Dexter not the ausie chap!) DDL

as you know i have this problem but i have 3 dogs that race to the door when postman is herd is normally big race to door to save mail we tried the basket thing just resulted in basket being torn down did want to get a post box outside but worry about post thieft.

Bella is beautiful Nick, shes 6 stone of fun, 28" tall at her shoulder and very protective of her territory, but an absolute sweetie when she knows you! I'll attach a couple of piccies so you can see her!

And this is our previous furbaby, Willow, with Mr D and my daughter Rachel. Unfortunately Willow was only with us for a month before she passed away, she was a rescue from Cheshire Dogs home, a wonderful friendly fun loving beauty, but she had cancer when we got her (we didnt know) and although we had her treated at the vets it was too far advanced for them to save her, so we lost her only 4 weeks after getting her, and 5 weeks after losing our previous dog, Lady.


This was Lady, Lee (Mr D) rescued her from the house next to his after her owners moved out and abandoned her (Police and RSPCA said they couldnt do anything for at least 3 days, and she'd been left for 2 already, so he went and got her!) and who was his shadow for 11 years, a wonderful loving dog, very intelligent and very relaxed!

Hi folks, just a quickie, has anyone any ideas to stop a dog chewing the mail? Our rescued Great Dane / Alsation crossbreed (Bella Donna) has recently started chewing the post, normally only letters, but Mr Dobby ordered me 2 Blackmore's Night Limited Edition CD's for my birthday at the weekend, and she's managed to open the package and rip the cover to shreds of the one in a special book bound fabric cover! Fortunately the discs are ok, but I know Mr D is going to be upset when he gets in tonight!

Normally Bella is a lovely dog, very loving, loves to play, she's only 15 months old so still very much a pup, but just recently she's started to eat the mail and I think we need to nip the problem in the bud! I definitely dont want rid of her, she came into our lives after we had lost 2 dogs in a month (sad story that I will recount if folks want to hear it, but it is deffo a hanky alert type post!), and has proven to be a very loving hound and a definite part of the family!

When we first got our dog, she went through a chewing phase, but thankfully it was short. You could try something called a Kong, its a dog toy that it pretty much indestructible and you can put treats in it so that it smells and tastes much nicer than letters and cd's. They're3 not that cheap though and your pup sounds like she'll need the bigger size, but they do last for a long long time.

Hello Mrs Dobby, Thanks for sharing your pics with us. I'm so sorry for the loss of your dogs like that. I do know what it's like to loose a much loved pet - just a death in the family.
To stop Bella destroying the mail why not get an outside mailbox. This could also be to the benefit of your postman. I used to deliver items for a charity but had to give it up because of dogs barking, snapping and growling behind letterboxes. I'm sure they were all harmless - but when you don't know the dog it's a bit nerve wracking.
Anyway, hope you find a solution to Bella's antics with the mail.

How far are you away from the delivery office? If near, might be worth considering collecting it from there.

My sister has a lockable metal postbox outside the house, since her Bull Mastiff ate 2 new passports....

I have an outside mail box which is lockable and they are quite big so most things fit in them! Storm tends to walk off with all mail, any paper, till receipts and anything else that is at nose level! Tried nasty smelling and tasting stuff no joy! Good luck!

How about training him not to eat the post ?? Our Aimee (rescue dog, lab/collie cross, now 15 months old) used to race to the front door when the postman came, although didn't eat the post, but after alot of hard work getting her to stay (working with the lead for a while) she is now very well behaved, not just in this situation but alot of others too. So it has had greater benefits too.

Try the Dog Listener from the library. Very good book for training dogs. Certainly worked for us.

Hi Mrs Dobby, just realised you're only over the canal from us!
We had a lovely, lively boxer dog called Tess who used to chew all our mail so I got one of the cages which fixes onto the back of the letter box. It worked for a while but now & again when the postman tried to put something large through he would end up pushing the cage off the screws it hooked over & everything including the cage would end up chewed! Tess did calm down as she got older though so maybe Bella will grow out of it eventually. My sister-in-law has one of the boxes mounted on the wall outside as her German Shepherd cross dog Tasha eats everything which comes through their door, make sure you get a lockable one though if you do get one.
Lovely pics. by the way, sorry about your other dogs, we lost Tess to cancer & it is heartbreaking no matter how long or short a time you've had them.
