There are whiteface clowns, and the other type, the 'auguste' clowns, like the great Charlie Carolli, who played weird musical instruments (when I was a kid, there was a kids TV prog called "Right Charlie" starring Carolli, he once played a kitchen sink, with a trumpet mouthpiece attached to the plughole). Neither sort has ever worried me, but the whiteface, especially 'solo' clowns, are not really fun at all.
