Hi can anyone help me with this unusual request??

A friend of mine has just moved to a house which borders the river wyre and we were wondering about catching some cray fish a la hfw did.

I have found a company to buy a trap off but just wondered if i am completly waisting my money????

First thing is to make sure you know the difference between our native crayfish (increasingly endangered) and the American Signal Crayfish, an introduced species. And read this:

Actually, on a serious note - A, have you read tonights paper? theres a small article about the River Wyre - pollution in the river has lead health offiicials to place a tempoerary ban on shellfish gathering. Pollution control officers from Wyre council went out to investigate when residents in the Thornton area rang in to complain about a bad smell. The officials found that Skippool Creek had been contaminated, possibly with liquid animal manure.

Guess it may be wise for your friends to hang fire for a while with the crayfish catching.
