My mum and gran taught me to knit when I was young it was hilarious as I am left handed and they are both right handed somehow my knitting was kinda back to front, it woul take them ages to fix a mistake!!

Me too. The old lady next door to my mum taught me to knit to, when I was about 7.
I now live in her house.

can anyone explain to me how to cast off? been struggling

Knit the first two stitches (assuming you knit from the left needle to the right) put left needle under the first stitch you knitted )closest to your right hand) and lift it over the second one and off the end of the needle. You should now have one stitch on the right needle. Knit the next stitch and repeat the passing stitch over bit. Repeat till the end when I usually loop the yarn round the needle and pass the last stitch over that, pulling the loop through and finishing off. Hope that is clear enough to follow.

Thanks Sarz - I have been knitting since I was about 4 and just cast off without thinking about it. It was interesting to actually study the process and write it down!

Well done on the squares. I must remember to scan in the baby outfit pattern I found and send it to you. It is just done in stocking stitch with some very simple shaping.

I keep reading the instructions on that page i posted for how to increase and decrease... I must say, absolute clarity eludes me I'll have to just try and do it once I'm finished with squares, hopefully it will make more sense when I'm doing the actions rather than just trying to imagine them!
