I got me a new toy! Plug-In Mains Power and Energy Monitor > Maplin

A full kettle takes 0.01 kW to boil
My cappuccino maker takes 0.04kW to make just one cup
My battery charger has been on for an hour and hasn't even registered yet

              -----

my electric bill says a unit costs 25.5p
so how do I do the maths?
              A unit isn't a kW

A unit is a kWh, ie one kilowatt running for an hour, and that is probably what your monitor actually measures.
If a kettle runs at 1kW for 36 seconds, that would use 0.01 units (seems low to me).
Cappuccino uses steam. It takes a lot of energy to turn water into steam.
Most AA rechargeable batteries are less than 2 amp-hours at 3 volts, ie 6Wh to fully charge. If you are charging 4 of them, then from 'flat' to 'full' would use 0.024 units, but quite a lot hold even less power than that, and don't even 'quick' chargers take 5 hours for a full charge?

Even recharging a heavy duty car-type battery is not going to cost many units. Typically it is 100Ah at 12 volts, 1.2 units in total....

If you go onto your energy provider's website, they should have a price list and you can find out the price per kwh for your tariff.

                    I'd opt for having a pint instead - it's only 2-3 units.

Yeah up to the 18th century, they drank ale (safer than water) for breakfast but it takes three cups of tea to get me to work(and I don't have to drive) .. in the wookshop i'd probably chop my hand off by lunchtime...also in my advancing years I find if I drink in daylight hours i have to have a siesta

A unit is a kwh (h=hour) so the leccy company charge you by the hour. You need to work out how many kw are used for a unit of time. So how many minutes did it take to boil the kettle?

                          If it was 1 minute then you used 0.01kw x 1/60 = 0.00016 kwh.

                          So the cost is 25.5p x 0.00016 = 0.004p!

Can you check that for me Hilary?

I reckon it was 0.01kWh anyway (which still seems a bit low). The arithmetic is OK<g>
