According to my Oxford English dictionary it can be spelt adviser or advisor.

My SIL and BIL are 'financial advisers'....which is what they have on their business cards ..but they have said it can be with an e or an o, although e is more typical!

I found this too .. which says both are correct , but e is generally more accepted!

I was under the impression that AdvisOr is the American spelling, AdvisEr is the English spelling? Could be wrong!
Also, I think it's "English Speaking (Business) Adviser", or "(Business) Adviser, English Spoken".

              it's 'english speaking adviser'
'spoken' is 'past tense' for an individual, speaking is 'past continous', which would encompass a class of persons doing the same thing.
adviser is english, advisOr is american english, you could use either and be correct internationally.

Hmm...trying to get across the fact that it's an English person ( understanding the English requirements) rather than a French person who speaks English but not quite grasping the cultural differences .

Bit of a riddle for something so simple! I suggested 'Native English speaker' ..but it sounds a bit cave man like/Red Indian...not quite the impression you want to give to clients for a forward thinking firm!

Good grief, what a complicated language - I thought it meant someone who advised people (on whatever) when the person speaking the English was, no no, that's no it, so the person being advised was ....

OK, so the advisor/er spoke English and the advisee didn't, no that wouldn't work because they wouldn't understand each other. OK, helping people whose first language wasn't English to speak English - ie an Advisor on how to speak English. Yes that's what I thought it meant.

Will someone please advise me how to understand English. (And I speak as an ex volunteer teacher to English to those with no English at all - used a lot of pictures - far easier).

I thought that myself at first but, Advisor is still British English. In fact Adviser is used more in the US than here.

According to the Cambridge Guide to English Usage (Pam Peters, 2004):

Both these spellings are in current use, though adviser is the dominant spelling in both the US and the UK. The ratio in American data from CCAE is 20:1 and in British data from the BNC it's 6:1. Curiously, advisor is sometimes said to be "the American spelling." Whatever its past, advisor is registered alongside adviser in major British, American, Canadian and Australian dictionaries.
