OUr house was built in 1879 and had coal gas (very posh for up here) pipes built in - they appear in the most unlikely places, but are completely redundant. Is that a a possibility ?

I still think it's a bit weird but the most likely explanation does seem to be a redundant heating pipe of some kind. I wouldn't dare rip it out myself (just in case I suddenly drain the entire North Sea gas field ) but as it doesn't appear to fuel or drain anything, I should think a man-who-can will be able to cap it and remove it where it appears. Allowing me free rein to take a hammer to the boarded up fireplace. Hooray!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
