Yep, I reckon some type of acer palmatum is a good bet - here's one we grew from seed about 10 years ago.

I do favour an Acer but truly it is so so soooo windy here - not least because we are on the sodding runway but it doesn't help with all the 'copters whoosing over me

I wouldn't worry TOO much about acer + wind. If the wind is THAT bad it might be a problem for ANYTHING in a pot!

If you've trouble with wind then stay away from the finer leaved varieties. Our palmatums do get a bit of wind burn but mainly just crispy round the edges of the leaves unless its really bad.

so do you think if I went for a taller, more expensive specimen it may deal with the wind better - or should I plant burp-eez in there!

I want to get a tree in memory of Charlie but as you know I won't be here in Benson for all time to come - so I need the following considerations:
- needs to live in a pot for the next seven years at least
- foliage to be ginger/red/orange colour

sounds like Acer to me. Doesn't like windy conditions though
