homework

Lauren is 7 and her teacher does not give homework, but does expect reading and spellings to be practised and reading diaries to be signed by parents. Now and again Lauren will mention something she has done and want to find out more for herself though, admittedly not as much now as she prefers to play out with her friends.

Hannah is nearly 5 (started school at 4 1/4) and she had homework right from the start in September. They have now run out of the homework sheets thank goodness as I felt it was such a waste of time. Some examples were;

measure how many books tall you are
count how many small items you can fit into a .....
how many items casn you fit into the circle

I can see how they will benefit some children whose parents dont see a learning experience round each corner but some were just plain stupid. Hannah found them boring and so you can imagine how tedious I found them.

We also have reading to practice - I wasnt aware till I did some volunteer time at the school that the teachers only change the books if the diary is signed by you and the child wont go up a level until a certain number of books have been read. - I felt terrible - now feel I am trying to play catch up so am planning on doing lots of reading with her in half term next week.

i'm sure a lot of scandinavian &australian schools don't actually start school till they 7,i'm sure by the time they reach college/uni or whatever they not behind,.i think some are ready to start learning earlier than others.daisy's always been really bright & enthusiastic about academic stuff,whereas i think it's gonna be a bit more of a struggle for ash,but then he has areas where he shines & i think you can sometimes get bogged down by the averages & made to worry if yours aren't at least 1 step ahead..i say lets get growing green fingered kiddies!

Never really done cake decorating but I'd love to give the darlak a go kids would be thrilled!

plaster came off @ nursery,he not letting me look but insists it gone...me thinks he's fibbing!not causing him pain anymore so think its waiting game,just keep my eyes peeled 4 septic finger(makes the idea of porkfat a bit more appealing?)CAKE_(should prob be on diff forum now sorry but here goes!)i made 4x deep tin sponges(could use bought if easier)&1 pyrex bowl sponge 4 the top,sandwich together with a little stiff icing,wait 2 set,shave down sides 2 make dalek shaped,cover with buttercream icing(mixed with coco powder)then the fun bit...maltesers 4 the bobbles,mini choc fingers 4 the top bits,cut a square from cad mini bar 4 control panel,flakes & lolipops 4 stickyout bits,"laces"2 go round head finish off with rolos 4 the feelers.(not drwho watcher so dont know all the terminology!)good luck

Yep, I can!! I'd find that pretty tedious too! I know young kids need to practice their reading but giving them other homework so young is just plain silly. They need time to play and be children.
