I am technically "obese" also, but I'm certainly not 73 stone!!!!

I just don't understand how you can let yourself get that fat. It's not like you wake up one morning and you've put 30 stone on without realising it....

We watched it, and I was horrifed to see them feeding the little baby the burgers and fries...

When I first started nursing in 1992 we had bariatric patients in so infrequently that when we did we had to borrow a bariatric bed from another hospital. Now we have a whole store of extra large beds, chairs, commodes, wheelchair etc.
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

        How does it start??

Well one way is to GYOwn veg, then roll them is juicy melted butter followed by fruit crumble and home-made strawberry ice-cream and a shot of lemoncello or rhubarb schnapps ..... or 2..... or 3........

Seriously though....I missed last night's programme ...and I am overweight...but not that much!
I used to work in the NHS and so many problems were weight induced.
        Bit sad really.

Ooh, delighted, just checked my BMI here BBC - Health - Healthy living - Body Mass Index calculator (imperial) and found that I am just under 25. Mind you, I would say I need to lose a good stone to feel a healthier weight for my height.

Same here Shirl, I could do with chopping off 14lbs to be 'at my bestest'.

As for 73stone-man, I would let him have a teddy-throwing session and say 'now look here buddy*, if you can't get to the mackydee shop then you don't get the mackydees innit'

*they are all called buddy in 'merca

well done squashysu & janeyo!4 some of us keeping healthy weight's a constant struggle, but the difference between "us" & "them" on telly was that they relied on their "loved" ones 2 get them fatter & fatter &...... &as 4 sitting feeding their babe on a burger just after it@s grandad has gone thru lifesaving treatment..??!!don@t know,is it neglect\abuse or just plain ignorance?

One of my niece's has a two and half year old daughter she is not overweight and is tall for her age, had problems feeding as a baby and had reflux undiagnosed at first. Tends to be underweight more often than not.
My niece lets her eat anything buys a lot of food when she is out ( everyday ) then buys more when she wont eat it, lets her have sweets, chocolate cake and anything else she wants, I think she gives her too much choice and puts too much on her plate
The health visitor told her to give her anything as long as she is eating its ok.
What sort of advice is that. ?

my sisters dr apparently "prescribed"coke(the drink i assume!)&sweets if that's all they fancy when ill!?supposedly 2 keep their energy up?cant think of a better way to boost your immune system!lol!but scary to think theres some health pros out there promoting such rubbish!because it came from the mouth of a dr my sis still religiously dishes out this "medecine"every time they a little under the weather, luckily 2 are very active(maybe the coke?)so not overweight, but her eldest is less active(maybe the coke?)&gradually piling on the pounds, but unfortunately my advice against a drs don't go too far

I remember being told to give Daniel jelly when he was running a high temp and vomiting, because the liquid was 'locked in', so less likely to come straight back, and the sugar to help balance the electrolytes as he wouldn't drink the sachets of dioralyte. I'm sure I remember the idea of flat coke as well, (not diet), but I can't remember the exact explanation. Never told to give sweets though.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

                          Thanks guys,

I am still fat (i could do with losing another 3 stone!!!!) then i would be thinner, but i am hoping my lovely fresh veg will be helping me and the lovely strawberries.

My sis had bariatric surgery and it didnt work, i know my pitfalls of not eating enough, especially when I had twins running around, i didnt have the time.

I did the WW points and lost a stone and then gave that up and lost 1.5 myself! moving house helped i think (stress)!!

Well done Janeyo for losing all those pounds keep going.

I do think this gardening lark will certainly help me, but at least i am no way near 73 stone, and my kids dont constantly eat burgers, mind you i am making sausage & chips for tea (but only with real spuds!!!)

In 1976 when I started nursing, the word bariatric was unheard of.

Did have one patient that needed to go to hosp about 7 yrs ago now, the firemen took out the front bay windows as the ambulance crew could not get the patient out the conventional way.

We had a similar incident a few years ago with a chap who lived in a caravan, firebrigade had to remove the side! Poor bloke must have felt terrible.
