Should I know who Joe Swift is?
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

I don't watch GW anymore, so can't comment on the content. However aren't London allotments as rare as hens teeth? Doesn't your average London resident have to put their name down whilst in the womb in order to have one at retirement? So how come one is conveniently available for the BBC? If I were on one of those interminable waiting lists I'd be more than a little peeved - or did the beeb foresee the grow-your-own revolution ten years ago, and make arrangements? Judging by their insistence upon making several series of Ground Force, I'd think that was highly unlikely - unless they think it's funny to watch people removing several tons of concrete before they can start their veg plot.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

                    Robbed this pic from BBC.

Hope this picture works... i view of Joe's E-bay shed and some film crew lurking in the background.

I read somewhere the council 'scraped' back the surface and Joe rotorvated the plot.

he paid for that thing??? hmmmm he paid or the licence payer paid?

I was disgusted that the council scraped the plot back, there is no way on earth that our council would do that, if you get offered a plot covered in crap, then covered in crap it stays! Makes me so blummin angry.......why not be realistic like Digging for Victory? It gives people a false view of real allotmenteering, so when people are given an allotment, they are VERY dissappointed.

Give SWIFT a challenge of turning round a proper allotment, with weeds and everything else that grows sky high when left for a few months!

                          Sorry for ranting

I agree with allotment lady, also I don't want to appear selfish but showing owning an allotment through rose tinted spectacles might encourage the wrong 'sort' of person - you know - the jumping on the band wagon type - I am not keen on being asked to cut my allotment in half because someone wants to grow weeds on the bit they are given. I think they need to show how hard owning an allotment can be so that we only get realistic people taking on plots - nothing worse than a sea of weeds next to you!

I did think it was interesting, considering that the general impression is that there are so few allotments and lots of people looking for them, that JS was able to choose his, rejecting a site close to home in favour of one 45 minutes away on his bike. Like, realistically, how often would you go if it was 45 minutes on the bike?! And 45 minutes home after working for a couple of hours. Or am I just a bit too cocooned from "London" city life in the little smoke in Dublin? (Or is this going to be his more or less permenant job for the next year or so, so that is his daily commute rather than after work trek?)

Mines about seven mile away, five min by car but God knows how long by bike!
