I second Seahorse, I'd like to see Cuba before it 'modernises', and would love to travel more throughout Europe (only been to Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Berlin!), and would also love to go to Australia and New Zealand.

For those who have said Mexico, yes! Go there, its a wonderful country, even if I say so myself! (I know, I'm biased ) there's so much to do and see and the food is amazing!

I spent best part of a year travelling around western europe, but the only place outside of europe I've been is Mauritius last year so my list is very very long!!!! There are very few places I would turn down the opportunity to see, trouble is work and finances keep getting in the way Roll on retirement AND a lottery win!!

If go to Mexico, I'd pack in Cuba and also a short excursion down to Belize and perhaps Guatemela. 4-5 countries for the price of one major air ticket from the UK . This is how I pack in several countries wherever I'm going.

At 60 I don't know how long I've got or what my future health will be like. And travel companies are making it more and more difficult for older people to travel abroad.

Cheer up, 60 is the new 50 so you're actually 50 and jolly young enough to travel round the world . If you like, take a friend or other family members with you. I heard that it's when you hit 80 that travel insurance gets impossibly expensive.

That will be at least a month holiday Veg. I like a 2 to 3 weeks holiday, more than that will be very difficult.

I like to make my money go further, many countries for the price of one main air ticket . Mind you one month is not as bad as one year that certain breed of backpacking people seem to undertake esp. if they're going to end up coming home totally broke and needing a job so much so that it sort of gets stressful with the thought of returning home (have met people like these on my travels). However one year round the world trip is okay if you've retired and can genuinely afford it but not for everybody obviously.

K2, why not Everest ? Is it because it's supposed to be higher than Everest, though much disputed?

No, it's not about height, more about the actual climb. K2 is much harder and more inaccessible and therefore a much greater challenge. You can pay to be dragged to the top of Everest now, and that just doesn't push my button!!.

For me I'd love to go back to Morroco and the Agoundis Valley. I climbed to the top of Mount Toubkal (only 14,000 ft!) the year I was 40 and surveyed the whole of north Africa. Brill!

I wouldn't be able to do it now, but the Berbers were such lovely people I would just like to see it all again.

I have already posted once on this thread and dont want to change my original plans, however, having never been to Tain, Easter Ross, I would like to go there and help Sewer Rat in his time of need, and also to improve my British geography.

For now I can only think of Russia (St Petersburg) and south pole (but I can't take cold ).

Not keen over a trip to South Pole but St Petersburgh is the one of my sought after Russian destination too. Used to be called Leningrad when the communist took over but hopefully all the past glories of its rich heritage may have been revived if not a bit touristy. Mind you, it looks good in the travel brochures . They're like your seed catalogues .

Me too...I believe Angkor Wot is one of those must see place although it's not that well known as Taj Mahal or Pyramids or Great Wall of China among the common everyday folks. I did a bit of travel research trying to work out the cheapest option of a short excursion there and it might be better still to fly to Bangkok where you can either take a tedious coach trip or short flight to Seam Reap, nearest city/town to the ruins I believe.

True, you can pay (excessive) to make sure you make it back alive although last time I heard, it's normal to have 20 deaths a year including experienced climbers not because of incompetence but the unpredictability of the weather. The Sherpas look after their climbing clients yet they're not even allowed to join them at the summit.

I met a Japanese man who had climbed the Everest, showed us the picture with great pride but he also told us that his climbing partner, another Japanese man died there. That's the harsh reality about climbing mountains at this level that puts me off, you encounter dead bodies along the way and seriously ill or injured climbers are left behind by the other climbers as they would endanger their lives too. BTW an American climbing expedition for a TV program stumbled upon Mallory's body, they even found his bill he had paid for trekking gear with his clothing which he had bought in London. The American crew made teasing comments about his Englishness yet he was highly revered like meeting their Rock idol.

Not sure if reality would meet the dream these days - I went back to Newquay a few years ago and it really was HORRIBLE. I'll never go again.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a cowboy, so I learnt to ride a horse, fire a gun, make a campfire, drink black coffee and roll cigarettes.
I also once rode a freight train in Finland through the Midnight sun, sitting on top of paper bales while some French guys played a guitar - magical. I don't think anything much can top that.

Now I'm at the age where I feel that East or West, home is best and have no desire to spend hours in a terminal waiting to fly ever again, so it's Europe for me, and France most of all (I can 'get by' in French). I love the culture and atmosphere there, and whenever we go over and workers demonstrating in the street it fills me with shame that we've lost that here.
