Boy, we're having probs with our post: letters sent but missing. 3 items in four days arriving without enough postage, so we've had to pay (online) a pound for each item as a fine, and wait god knows how long for them to put thru our door (3 days since I paid, still nothing).

today, a packet I took to Post Office and had weighed and measured, arrived "without sufficient postage" and the recipient was fined a pound.

Do I smell a scam?

I think it's all a big con, they have us so confused that they charge what they like and when we get a 'fine' we just assume they are right and we must be wrong....so we, like the good people we are pay up without question.

You could well be right i purchased some old stamps on ebay from some body in Suffolk they was posted on the 18 jan got them yesterday 25 days later with a ticket on for a quid surchage i did not pay post men did not ask so it could be a scam in your area jacob

Just last weekend, I too had a post with insufficient postage but only by 6p and I had to pay the whopping �1 just for handling charge. Luckily I had an old �1 stamp lying around which was reclaimed from a parcel we received as sometimes you get unfranked stamps . I posted the 'penalty payment card' on Saturday and my post (the one with insufficient stamps) was delivered on Monday.

But yours sounds like scam where you had the packet weighed at the Post Office, can't be right! I thought if we do right by them, you'd be alright but now that you've reported this, I wonder how often the Royal Mail will try to pull this trick.

If you have proof (certificate of posting - including weight/dtae/time/price) that it was weighed (and now measured) at the PO do put in a claim on behalf of the 'fined' recipient.

I an an A**N ladt in spare time and the reps helps each other out with hard to find items and this happened to someone I helped out. I only got to find out after another query had been raised on the website.

I was red with embarrasment and put a claim in and she received a book of 1st class stamps as compensation - better than kick to rear end and more than she had to pay to get her mitts on goods!

And just like 'veg' I have no conscience in using stamps which have passed thru unfranked to my custody as payment for parcels or other items!

I think most of these problems kicked off when Royal Mail (in their wisdom) changed the charging system. Items now don't go just by weight, but also by size and thickness. How complicated?? Even the counter staff at Post Offices find it hard. However, if you take your item to a Post Office, get it weighed and checked and ask for a proof of posting (free by the way), then you or the recipient should have good grounds for a complaint and refund. ESPECIALLY IF THEY PUT ONE OF THOSE PRINTED POSTAGE LABELS ON IT AS THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE BY POST OFFICE STAFF AND PROVES THAT THEY HAVE DECIDED HOW MUCH POSTAGE IS DUE!!!!!!

they are crap when i was in basra i got a two birthday cards two days after my birthday(29th jan) well i thought it was. infact they were christmass cards posted on 14th dec
