argh I'm clearly a dumbass and can't use google maps. I think I've managed to add 3 markers, but i'm not entirely sure how, and they only show up on the list and not on the map (so I can't delete them). Erm, help?

Ahem. I've now worked out how to use google maps, and have added a proper marker on that actually works for myself.

...The other 3 (Sez's place, no 83 and no 84 are on the list but don't show on the map though, so I don't know how to delete them! If anyone can figure out how please delete away. Sorry )

The maps take forever to load don't they? Is anyone using Google Earth to view this, rather than Google Maps? If so, forgive me for pointing out the obvious!

If you download and install Google Earth you get a copy of the global map on your hard drive. By opening the grapes map in Google Maps and then clicking 'View in Google Earth' you can download the place markers (ie where all our plots are) and view them on your own saved version of the map.

This way you are using map data off your hard drive rather than off the web, so it loads almost instantly - about as fast as I can scroll. The online data changes whenever anyone adds or updates a data point, but as long as you go through the downloading process via Google Maps each time you view (only takes a few seconds) rather than just viewing the saved grape data from your hard drive, you'll stay up to date.

I think that's how it works anyway... Wayne?!

Grapes Maps

1st you must have a google account - open the map and try signing in - top right. When you've signed in/created an account reopen the map.

Type your address or post code in the search bar - click 'search maps'
This should zoom you to where you 'grow' or live.
Under where it says 'google maps uk' click on the tab that says 'My maps' (so you put your pin in the main map where evryone else is).
On the left hand menu (to the right of HWs piccy) click 'edit'
On the map (top left) click on the blue pin (looks like a balloon) and then drag it to where you want it to be, click again to 'set' it.
A box appears - type your details in the Title (and description if you like) then click Okay.
Back on the left hand menu (near HW's piccy) click Save, then click Done.

That should be you added to the Grapes Map?

I think you're right Paul, anything that loads up "locally" (from your pc) is going to be quicker. The problem with Google Earth lies with graphics cards. My own pc at home goes pop if I try and load up Google Earth as the graphics card is not powerful enough. My machine is no iMac, but it's certainly not old and decrepid. Be warned.

Well no, you might not have a seperate card - your machine could be sharing the pcs memory allocation, as my laptop does. 512mb ram, 8mb allocated to run the video side of things - machine also goes pop when running google earth! 8mb not enough. Could also be to do with the processing power, but not in my case....

Viewing the Grape map through Google Earth is a good option for me, loads faster & easier to scroll around. We definately have a graphics card though - OH is a gamer, so we've got the best one we could(n't) afford, although it's probably obsolete by now

Well you've been hiding your light under a bushel SBP! Didn't know you were such a techy.

It didn't occur to me that my PC was particularly hot - but I do have 2Gb ram and a graphics card. I'm glad of it though - this map business is amazing.
