how to get nail varnish out of the carpet?

Yes, another disaster Chez 2Sheds.

I am going to try nail varnish remover, but has anyone actually done it successfully? I am worried about spreading the mess even further, or dissolving the carpet!

I think you'll dissolve the carpet with nail varnish remover! Try it in a little area first, though. I can recommend Safeclean carpet cleaner people, but if you want to wing it, I found this link.

Not sure how much you have but I have read that once it's dry it will just sort of flake(?) off.
Depends upon whether or not you want to chance it though.

An acetone free remover should be okay but may leave an oily stain. Work from the outside to the middle of the stain to restrict its travel. Good luck!!

Cotton wool ball soaked in nail polish remover, then squeeze to remove excess so it's wet but not dripping. Place on stain for a few minutes to soften nail varnish and blot with clean cotton wool. Keep going till it's gone. BTW, was it a whole bottle of nail polish, or just a few drops?

A good half a bottle. Electric blue, on a beige carpet. The mark is about 12 inches long - very Jackson Pollock, but OH couldn't see the beauty in it I will go with the varnish remover, thanks all for your help.

Disaster No.2, and I know it was an accident waiting to happen: turned electric hob on to warm up, forgot it was on, and put hand on it. Took hand off again PDQ, but got a lovely big blister to remind me not to do that again.

Where is disaster no.3 ? Will I actually leave the tealight burning on the tellybox? (never again). Or will I leave the iron switched on all day? Or the beans? the possibilities are infinite ...

Once nail varnish has 'cured' it goes very brittle. It may be a good idea to just leave it to it's own devices and remove it gradually through normal wear and tear with a stiff brush. If you have a synthetic carpet, the remover may damage the pile. Don't go for an instant cure.

Well, a quick update.
Most of it wore off with scratching and everyday wear and tear. The big blobs I dissolved with nail polish remover on a cotton bud, and dabbing with clean kitchen towel.
The stain is no longer there, hurrah.
