Or how about James Bond: Casino Royal - you can't beat a bit of Daniel Craig. Or Hot Fuzz for a good Simon Pegg comedy. The Holiday is a good "feel good" movie, if a wee bit soppy, or The Green Mile & Shawshank Redemption which have been out for ages but are fabulous films that will make the hardest heart cry!

I liked Elf. It's good to watch a film every now and then that doesn't take much thinking.Originally posted by smallblueplanet View PostAny good Christmas movies? I shudder to admit I mindlessly watched 'Elf' the other week

For Christmas I'm a big Ray Harryhausen fan, so the Jason & the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, and Sinbad films come out for me.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

Another one I'd recommend is a film called Hard Candy. It was out a couple of years ago. It's one of those films that's uncomfortable, yet compelling at the same time. It certainly tackles a dangerous subject very well.A simple dude trying to grow veg. http://haywayne.blogspot.com/

How soppy, I thought it looked like a 'rom-com' from the tesco reviews? I hate 'tear-jerkers', suffice it to say I've never seen Love Story or Dr Zhivago!Originally posted by NewbieThe Holiday is a good "feel good" movie, if a wee bit soppy....

Hi Manda,
On the sci-fi front, have you seen Contact with Jodie Foster and Matthew Mccon, Macon, muconahey??? Great film but not quite the sci-fi western you were talking about.
Or..Close Encounters of the third kind
What about disaster movies? Dante's Peak, Volcano, Twister, Towering inferno etc..
I agree, the Bourne films are brill (haven't seen the last one yet though)
And lastly, The Princess Bride - pure unadulterated escapeism - Typical fairy story, very funny in places and with an all star cast.
Whatever you decide, have fun with them.

Ok scarey55 & shirl - seen Close encounters - kak! Dante's Peak - bad, and a Knight's Tale - silly.
Will check out Princess Bride.
C'mon then, who's seen 'Hobsons Choice'? highly recommended (by me!) would be what's now called a Rom Com, but its B&W!

Can't say as I have - I don't watch films much and have a tendency to fall asleep shortly after the start and wake up in time for the credits!!!
I went to see Close Encounters many years ago (when it first came out) with a nice young man name of Suggs, he wanted to become a musician.
Strangely, I don't remember much about the movie

Bourne movies are a must. The last instalment is now available to buy.
If you can find Brassed Off watch it. It's a Brit flick. .........
Synopsis
Brassed Off is a charming comedic drama starring Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaithe and Tara Fitzgerald. When government cutbacks threaten a century-old Yorkshire mine, the brass band--consisting of the miners and their families--struggles to keep it together in the face of economic repression and emotional turmoil. (its a true Story)

Oceans 11 is good, got a good twist, but don't under any circumstances bother with the next 2 films. Totally rubbish.
