Well just how stupid is that?

Best tell the French then- the markets are full ( well not quite 'full' ) of little ol' French ladies sitting next to pots of home made confiture which they sell for about �2.50 a pot.

Maybe 'cos it's called 'confiture' over here that they can get away with it????- tis not the same as jam!

Now does it refer to the reuse of the lid?, I can't see a problem per se with using the glass jar and a cellophane lid. Every bottle I've ever bought for home brew has required sterilising, so how is that different?

Since its raining I decided to waste some time looking at the EC Regulations cited by the Daily Wail - EC Regulations 1935/2004 and 2023/2006,
EC Regulations 1935/2004 appears to relate primarily to plastics used in Food packaging and says that "glass" has not been covered by specific legislation (2009)
Regulation 2023/2006 seems to relate to printing ink on recycled containers and says that they should not come into contact with food stuff.
So no problem there
Caveat, I'm not a lawyer so who am I to say that the DailyWail are scaremongering?

I'd like to know the difference in sterilising Kilner jars and normal jars. How can a Kilner jar be acceptable but not another glass jar

Kilner jars are the result of over engineering a cellophane wrapper, and a elastic band.

The issue was discussed on R4 today: there have been NO prosecutions for using old jars
