HFW goes on about it somewhere...he even say you can eat slugs (puk!!)
I have eaten whelks - seasnails, but found the shoe was a bit chewy! I think I'll stick to them if I am really desperate
You can buy lovely fresh mackerel at the fishshop for approx 60p each....times cant be that hard?!?

I'd rather just eat the veg that the snails try to munch on!

HFW did eat snails, purged on lettuce for a while, on "A cook on the wildside" and I'm sure he said they were not hugely differentfrom those you'd get in a restaurant.
Bear in mind that in a similar series he also ate woodlice.
He tried slugs on Beyond River cottage and did not enjoy them at all.
Personally I'd never try them, but that's just 'cause the look disgusting.

I'm sure the large garden snail is not indigineous to britain and it was imported as a food item by the Normans, which like the flippin' rabbits, escaped. It's slugs that are inedible, snails are I am told edible.I do however tend to go with Food for Free by Richard Mabey,if it's in his book it's generally ok,snails are however NOT in his book.

i go on walks with people who collect any very large snails that they find, drop them in water and flour for 3 to 4 days then cook in the usual fashion.
i used to adore eating snails but have for some unknown reason become allergic to them, last two times i have had them (at reputable restaurants) i was violently sick

Roman snail. By the Romans It's now quite rare and is protected by law

The Roman snail is much bigger.
I've heard it recommended that you feed them on grated carrot. When their poo is orange you know they are cleaned out! I think the Romans fed them on milk for 4 days.

I just have to ask, how hungry are you? I can't imagine ever being that hungry.

I saw this on the tellybox once - not sure if it was HFW or not, but a lady collected them in her garden and kept them in a glass box (with lid), and purged them.

Not sure why anyone would want to though - I'll eat most things, but having tried snails once before, I have no need to try them again.

I think you'd have to ask yourself first why it was that the French went to all that trouble to make them edible, only to smother them in garlic butter. Could it be that they were so hungry circa-La Revolution that they would try ANYHING, but needed to disguise the taste with the strongest herbs they could find?!?! Maybe that tells you something!!

They have to use the strongest herbs possible to desguise the taste and use many different sauces to hide the taste?

Did they not eat loads of them before the revolution?

What did British people eat when there was not anything?

Like if there was a famine or not enough food to go round. I thought only in modern times that food is cheap.
