  • How do these syphons work?

    Anyone got one?
buy & learn about home brewing Young's Auto Syphon 4.5 Litre

I tried using it last night, the instructions were no help! Which end is the plastic tube supposed to go on?
I could achieve precisley nowt and used a jug instead.
Which was fine for putting into a demijohn, but will no doubt result in spilling all over the floor if I try it when bottling!

Also is the filter they claim is in it in any way effective?

    Thanks

They are a dodle when you get used to them.

The plastic tube goes over the bent end of the thin inner tube.

I sit my empty receiving DJ in the sink and the full DJ on the window sill to get a height difference.

Drop the loose end of the plastic tube into the empty DJ and then carefully lower the syphon into the full one.
Hold the thick tube firmly and pump the thin tube up and down a couple of times to start the wine flowing.
If the DJ is full to the neck, you will need to start pumping as soon as you start to lower it in.

Cool thanks. Much better instructions than on the packet!

I couldn't get the tube over the end of the inner tube, I'll try putting it hot water to stretch it to fit.

We've always used the 'basic syphon' method. More fun, because you get to taste the product......
