Actually, it took me ages to get to a red wine that I liked - the Director where I worked at the time did not help. I said that all wine 'tasted like Sarsons', and he said 'you must have a glass of this fabulous Borolo' which was Mr Full Bodied Red Wine and not for a beginner. Hence I thought that I didn't like red wine either. And just because it is WOW expensive, does not mean that it's a great taste either.

I have found that a merlot grape is quite soft and 'ribena like' and is a good starter for ten.

I also found my area was 'a jolly good rioja' - but I can only do one of those when the month has been a particularly good one!

*philisophically reflects that the Vine attacts a great deal of riff raff and retires to the boo-doir with said tea. Shakes head in disappointment

lmao ... look you're talking to the woman that grew all kinds of exotic veg this year and didn't actually like any of them ...... she also made a beautiful new bit of the garden and grew a whole bed of herbs in it ...... which she had absolutely no idea what to do with (except the mint) and gave most of em to next doors rabbit so she could grow strawberries in the herb bed next year

I'm a Shiraz woman meself. Off wine (and it has to be pretty well seriously off) goes in gravy or casseroles. Listen to your Aunty Hazel. And send all unwanted gifts of red to your Aunty Flum!

For those who 'didn't like red wine' until trying Merlot (same as me), look out also for Carmeniere. Very similar sort of balance. If you haven't 'progressed' beyond Merlot, but also like sparkling wine, try the sparkling Shiraz from Banrock Station or Jacob's Creek.
Lynda, you may find a sweet Cava acceptable, or Asti.
Adding lemonade to wine should be a hanging offence (unless the wine is so crapoy it wasn't worth drinking in the first place)! If you don't like the flavour of the alcohol, stick to fruit juice!
Lambrini is OK, but after a few years I found I was preferring something a bit less sweet (if you stick with the wine tasting, your tastebuds 'evolve').
The other 'sweeter than wine and mildly alcoholic' option is Perry. There are several around. You would want the 'medium sweet' one, which I used to drink but now find a bit too sweet, so I have switched to 'medium dry'
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

when i worked at an italian resturant, we used to eat the dish of the day before work, it was required and always served with red wine.....diluted with lemonade, so noone was drunk before work, not sure how many italians do this, but it was considered more of a sacriledge NOT to have the wine at all

I've personnally never understood why people try to adjust their tastebuds to more expensive wine???....wouldn't t be far cheaper to stick to the lambracol?....that said unfortunately my buds have become"slightly"more refined, although I find the coop often have very good 1/2 price jobbies going on!
....& as far as Banrock's sparkly shiraz......A bottle on a hot summers day has most definately put me off!......Andi dropped me off at Wyvale to get some seeds, wasn't my fault they had BS promo peeps in,whom held my arm behind my back until I bought 3 bottles....all the day before a music day in the park!!!
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

You see, I'm not 'A Wine Buff'..... I'm a 'what you see is what you get' girl basically.
                                I know what I like.
                                I know what I don't like.
And I'm a great believer in that wine is for drinking, not sitting on!
