  • Bush Rose's

As many will know I know little or nowt about flowers but..............

Earlier this year I had the house repointed and so the guys could get to the job had to remove 3 old rose's having promised SWMBO I would replace them.

I have just bought 3 bare root bushes Sheila's Perfume, Fragrant Cloud and Chandos Beauty.

    Couple of questions....

I have removed all the old roots but would I be better replacing the soil in the bed after all the old rose's were there for years.

Would it pay to soak the roots before planting.

Thanks for the help it will earn me some brownie points.

My first lot of roses didn't take the roses did grow from below the graft but the replacement plants have done well.

I dug out the soil, replaced with homemade compost and used the mycorrhizal fungi.

Mycorrhizal fungi ordered and on the way.

So I have had another idea and know you folks will be able to tell me if it has merit or if I am being daft.

What if instead of planting straight in the ground just before winter sets in I plant each bush in say a 15lt pot filled with used GP compost sweetened with FYM and over winter them in a cold GH. Would this give them a better start?

I would say no, get the roses in the ground as soon as possible. The soil is still warm enough that they can get settled in before winter. This will help them take off more quickly in the spring.

Well the 3 plants arrived today, 3 holes were dug 18" square and 18" deep, the holes were then filled to a level with home made compost making sure the graft was above soil level. The roots on the plants were already wet so they were sprinkled with root grow over the holes so any spillage went into the planting holes, roots spread and the holes filled with more home made compost mixed with dry FYM.

Guess its wait and see now Thanks for you help everyone.

It's funny how there is conflicting advice.
RHS says graft to be at soil level because burying it can cause die back.
David Austin says graft just below soil level as do Gardeners World.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
