  • White fly deterent?

Are there any flowers or other plants that can deter white fly, especially in a brassica bed?

Lavender is meant to deter whitefly (and suitable for a brassica bed). Companion plants for brassicas include Dill, Sage and Rosemary (to help hide the smell). Why not pop some borage into your bed - attracts hooverflies which eat the aphids (coriander does the same thing). Other option is German Chamomile (but it self seeds to blazes - part of the ragwort family (almost 100% sure it is part of the ragwort family)

my overwintering chillis have been plagued by whitefly. I have such a problem with this pest indoors and in the greenhouse. I read somewhere that spraying with stergene kills them - anyone heard this. where can I buy it?

Hi Dandalady. Stergene is a gentle hand wash liquid for clothes. You can probably buy it in any supermarket. Don't know how effective it is on whitefly but I seem to remember something similar for Fairy liquid and houseplants! Don't rely on my memory.

Try this link The National Vegetable Society, A cure for whitefly?

sorry never heard of the Stergene treatment.

I found that marigolds under the debris netting was very effective UNTIL the cold killed the marigolds, then I think the fly prefered the better conditions under the netting - so moved in by droves

The whitefly on brassicas is a different type to the one in the greenhouse , isn't it?
Wash-up liquid doesn't seem to work on me cabbages

Dunno! The caterpillars eat my brassicas too fast. Whitefly don't stand a chance.

To be honest, they dont give me sleepless nights. All i do is pull up the cabbage, give the whole thing a good shake then, cut off the unwanted leave, stem and roots, drop in the dalek then wash the cabbage head in a bucket of cold water while whistling 'swinging in the rain'

remembering, of course, to keep your mouth firmly closed whilst pulling up said cabbage!

I've got loads of pot marigolds on my plot that will self seed so I'll transplant them where necessary. In fact they were still flowering last weekend but current temperatures will probably see them off. I tried using diluted Ecover washing up liquid but it didn't have any effect.

I've got some lavender seeds to sow this year too. I love borage and was planning to plant Sage, Rosemary and dill anyway so maybe this year I'll be able to tackle the whitefly more successfully.

Pot (English) marigolds don't have the right scent: try French or Mexican I tried them for years though, and they don't work.

                              This does though: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ids_23557.html
