  • 3 Pages. 3!

I've been having problems with my broadband connection so have only been able to "look in" occasionally at work. I only have a very slow USB connection at the mo so bear with me. I logged on today as I wasn't needed at work. There are 3 pages just on the chit chat. I do know that even if I ignore what looks like a thread I'm not interested in, thread drift means I miss some really interesting nuggets. I will, will, will get this sorted.

I try to log on every day (usually evenings) but although it's really good to see so many new and active members I regularly get 5 or 6 pages of new posts. It might help a bit if people added to an existing thread on a subject they're interested in instead of creating a whole new one. Also they might find the answer they're looking for on an existing thread. It takes ages to trawl through all the new posts, and like you Janie B I don't want to miss anything interesting.

Hmm- yes- when I have time I try to read all threads- but a couple of days away- or a week() and I get lost!
I' don't really want to become selective , but it's clearly going that way from time to time
Sorry if I miss any personal quips...

.... I've been thinking for a while about being proactive about merging new threads into similar older ones (like the joke thread, all the parsnip ones (lol, did I mention the P word?? )

Might be about time to start it seems

I'm going to make myself really unpopular here and say that I ignore the following (I just don't have time to read everything on the Vine, so something has to give):
                      • threads that are just more of the same, eg parsnips
                      • posts that are so badly written that I can't understand what is being asked
                        • posts like: 'can I grow bananas in a dark basement?'
                      • threads that start "I've bought some seed, what do I do next?"

It's brilliant being able to discuss and offer help, but please do some basic research first ... in a book or by using the Search button. I fear that old timers will be overwhelmed and put off by the hundreds of new posts, and eventually not bother logging in at all. The Vine is utterly brilliant and has wonderful contributors, but it now needs pruning!

Must say, I agree with TwoSheds. The Vine really should be a place for discussion and tips, not really basic advice. Seed packets come with instructions on the back, so maybe this should be followed before asking questions on the Vine?

I remember the time (and I've only been here a year!) when I could read all the posts. I now browse and choose. I probably miss some good stuff but I can't keep up. It's great to see the vine expanding but it's a shame when sometimes the most apprpriate answer is "What did it say on the packet?"

Even I, as a relative newcomer, remember being able to read and respond to everything. I really dont like being selective but I have no choice and I'm sure I miss some discussions I'd like to contribute to but hey, thats life on the vine these days I guess!

Shortie - a bit of amalgamation sounds like a good idea, might help a bit ...
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance
