    Newbie from Hampshire

    Hello

    I have joined predominantly as I foster bunnies and guinea pigs for rescue and wanted to put their waste to better use by offering it to people with alotments as fertiliser. If someone could point me in the direction of where I would go about doing this, I would be very grateful

    Also I have just bought a new house for which we have grand plans for the garden (I'm a complete garden novice) so hopefully I should be able to learn quite a bit from this forum

      Your local council should be able to tell you where the allotments are in your area and probably give you a contact. Just a case then of contacting them and seeing if they are interested.

        Hello, welcome to the forum. We have five ginea pigs, it didn't occur to me to use their waste as compost. Perhaps I should try it.

        Can you use it on veggies?

            Add it to your compost heap to rot down. You certainly can use the resulting compost on veggies.

                        Thank you RustyLady, it occured to me that its probably healthier than cow or horse manure as our guinea pigs are never fed any antibiotics or medicines.

                            I use our rabbit manure directly on certain areas of the vegetable garden as well as adding to the compost and it does no harm...From memory, I think it is not as strong/potent as other animal waste...

                            For example, I always scatter a couple of shovel fulls over the garlic bed early in the year.....

                              Hi

                              Thanks for all the replies!

                              Sadly we produce too much waste with at least 5 rabbits and 5 guineas staying with me at any one time (usually is more than this too!) to be able to compost down myself in one bin - I suppose I could have a row of compost bins but our garden isn't really big enough for that plus I would worry about the flies in summer (flies are a big worry around bunnies as they can get a fatal disease called flystrike).

                              I'm based in Eastleigh, Hampshire - I wondered if there was an area of this forum where I could make a post specifying what the waste is I wanted to get rid of and where I was based, how much I would be able to offer etc. I can offer on Freecycle as quite often offer other bits and pieces on there but was directed here as an alternative to doing so.
