Is it worth buying Dr Hessayon's Vegetable and Herb Expert book?

    Is it worth buying Dr Hessayon's Vegetable and Herb Expert book?

    As there are a lot of sites where you can find veg growing info, is it worth spending money on this book?

    I have read on other sites that it is a veg growers bible.

    At the minute you can buy it from Tesco online, get free delivery and also get 100 free clubcard points which are worth £4 if you use them for clubcard deals like we do.

    Should I splash out and buy it?

    It's nice to have something to hand as a reference without going to the computer each time and Dr Hessayon's books are packed full of info. They are the first port of call for many beginners as they are well laid out and easy to understand.
    I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

      it is good and u can pick it up pretty cheap online but i would like even more detail in it like germination and growing temps which arent mentioned at all in my old copy

        I have the Flower Expert and House Plant Expert books which I haven't looked at for years and they were quite interesting from what I remember.

          The Veg and Herb book is great for reference for planting distances and everything - mine lives in the greenhouse for me to read when I am planting out.

            I forgot to say, I am growing everything in either baskets or containers, so would it still be worth buying if I am not planting in the ground?

                I frequently quote from it on here as it has info about diseases that crop up time and again.

                  i think theres only a one or two pages in the current version about container growing. just ignor the inbetween rows distances

                    Easy to read and understand, one of my fave books, nice n basic n lives in the car for when we get to the plot and need to check something!

                        Well worth it, I have a whole range of them. they crop up at boot fairs all the time. The Veg and Herb is the most thumbed.

                          It was my first book bought at the same time as my first seeds - it is my bible, have it to hand at all times along with Carol Kleins veg book.

                            They're OK as starter books with basic info and piccies of bugs / diseases but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they're bibles on the subject and the fruit one is sadly lacking in info about pruning (as I realised when I got to the lottie and bothered checking!)

                            Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                            Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                              We've got 2 of the veg ( one left at lottie and one next to my bed) and the fruit one.

                              Not very organically minded for pest control though...my friend has just started GYO in her garden and I bought both those books for her birthday...excellent basic info books.
