Default Hunters - are they worth it?

Are Hunters to wellies as Felco are to secateurs?

LadyWayne has offered to buy me a 'decent' pair of wellies - the cheapies I've bought in the past are either uncomfortable or just rubbish.

Any other recommendations?

I'm just talking wellies here - no riggers, no safety boots, no walking boots, no stillettos. Just wellies please.

Ponders... Wayne in Stilettos! ...

They're very comfortable and flexible, but definitely not warm. If you're not going out all day in freezing conditions they'll be fine. Unless you have warm feet, unlike me who has ice block feet!

To be honest no wellie will keep your feet that warm without a liners / thick socks which I think is one of their main down side. There are people on here who will swear that they're the best thing ever but I've never seen the attraction. I know you only want to talk wellies but perhaps it would help if you said why you're so fixed on them as oppose to the many other options?

Have had 2 pairs of Hunters now, neither has lasted a year, fortunately I have the receipt for the latest lot and they will be going back on Saturday.

I have had a pair of hunters for maybe 10 years and they are fine (probably go and split now). I dont wear them all the time as they are not warm only when it is really wet.

I have had Hunters and I agree with Glutton, they are not very warm and they do not have "grippy" enough soles for me. They look great, however and they have the Hunter name.

I have a pair of old 10 euro wellies that are fur lined and I am very happy with them. They are, in fact Wellie's Wellies that she left here after her visit

Warmth isn't an issue for me - I wear flip flops 90-95% of the year round the house and probably 50% of the year outside, which is why I have no interest in riggers. I've worn them for work and they make my feet sweat and stink.

I don't want boots with laces as I can't be faffed with doing them up. I want to be able to sit in the boot of the car, kick my shoes/flip flops off, and slip my boots on.

Waterproof and easy to put on/take off - oh, and comfortable too (the boots I've had tended to dig in to the top of my foot.

Never found wellies comfortable they always make my socks slip down so 's they're crunched up round my toes But I guess if you go straight from flipflops to wellies you don't do the sock thing.

I do like Hunter wellies. They are very comfortable. Their only problem being that, if you wear them regularly on surfaces other than soil, mud etc. the soles do wear out very quickly. wearing them to walk the dogs in the winter on the roads and pavements soon wears the soles very thin.

There are more upmarket Hunters with better soles but we really are talking silly money for those. If spending that kind of money I would be looking at Dubarries.

I know that you don't like Riggers but the thing I would actually miss most if I used something else was the fact that as they have steel toe caps, my toes and soles are protected and I don't end up with bruised toes all the time.

Go and try some on Wayne, that's the only way. I have high arches and instep, and find Hunters are tight round the foot. But I have wide calves, so always have to go up a size anyway, as I can't stand 'the ruched' welly look!

Trouble with that is - I've never seen them anywhere to try them on, and they only go up to a size 12 so I couldn't get a size above.

I tried on some at our local garden centre a couple of weeks ago MuckBootz and some other generic brand - neither were particularly comfortable, no more than my own anyways.

I needed new wellies and my uncle recommended derri boots, can see them here(Guy Derri Boots, Wellingtons, Hunter Wellingtons, Waders, Derry Boots, UK Shopping) - he has had the same pair for 10yrs - I just got myself a pair, find very comfy, great for walking the dogs, no digging with them yet, and although doesnt bother you, warm.

Know someone that gardens, mucks out horses and she reckons Hunters are a waste of money, she buys another brand - that I cant remember at all, she got ones with steel caps.

Was a bit worried when I read "All Things Bride & Beautiful", but kept scrolling...

I've had a bit of a thought anyways - I'm going to suggest that LadyWayne put the money towards a bike rack so we can go cycling together with Bean. It means we'll get to spend time together and I'll be able to get some training in at the same time.

Much better use of the money I think.

Having just back from buying a very nice pair of "wellies" from a discount shoe warehouse for £7.99 I think my views on expensive wellies are fairly obvious.....

Yup mine are Dunlop wellies too. Had them a few years, and before me they used to belong to the last Mme Leponge's ex husband, so they arent young.
For me (a paltry size 9) they are very comfy, and when I'm not wearing my flip flops I am generally wearing them.

Try the neoprene Muck Boots - no sweaty feet there. Bit pricey though.

I spend a lot of time in wellies, what with garden and horses.....Hunters look great but in wear terms they are c**p IMO. The seem to tear or split around the ankle in my case. Get a cheap pair from the market and spend a few quid on some good insoles (and drop big hints for a pair of cashmere socks as pressie) to keep your feet warm.

Alison, until recently I would have agreed with you but that is no longer the case I've recently bought a pair of Derwent Muck Boots (model is "Esk")and they are the warmest, most comfortable, luvveryly wellie I have ever owned (and I've been through a LOT of wellies). I have been out in the garden a few times this month and my feet are the one thing that has never been cold. They are neoprene lined, blissfully comfortable, with soles that shed soil easily.

Cheaper than Hunters (and I have worn out two pairs of them), about £50 from our local farm supply. A neighbour has been planting trees in Ennerdale last week and he joked that his feet were the only warm thing in the entire volunteer group (and if you know Ennerdale and West Cumbria you'll appreciate how cold it has been recently).

No affiliation, blabla, just the best winter gardening footwear I've ever come across.

Sound good but there is no way I'd pay £50 for lottie boots - my riggers were free from work about 15 years ago and still going strong

How is it that riggers or ugg boots worn by a woman looks sexy, yet when I wear mine I look like a tramp?

My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Not perfect, but perfectly acceptable(Snadge)

By the time you've got the hoe from the shed at the end of the garden, you could have hand weeded the area! (Geoff Hamiltom-ish)

Thanks for all the recommendations - some interesting choices. It's interesting to see that warmth seems to be the biggest concern for most people - but as I've said, it's not mine. I have high blood pressure so am always warm, and me feet are so far away from my head that by the time it registers that they are cold (which never happens) I'm likely to be at home anyway.

I did look at the Muck Bootz (sp?) - they sell them at our local garden centre, but they were'nt that comfortable for me - a bit narrow across the foot - and having read reviews on them with people mentioning things like taht fact they'd not waterproof (on account of being largely neoprene) and that they snag on brambles etc.

As I said, I think I'll just make do with my slightly uncomfortable Dunlops - it's not like I wear them day in, day out. I've now spent the money on a back rack anyways.

Practise makes us a little better, it doesn't make us perfect.

What would Vedder do?
