Default why is this site so slow now?

It was fine this morning, but tonight it is so slow. Somebody put some more coal in the engine please

Have to say I'm getting a bit fed up with it happening soooo often...doesn't seem to happen elsewhere.

Driving me nuts too, hope whatever is causing it gets sorted soon.
Another stitching forum I go on is an invision forum, and it has been having log on problems so maybe it is a general forum problem?

What we have to think about is:

1. are there any scripts running a cronjob being launched in the evenings and using resources?
2. bandwidth - is there sufficient?
3. server resource - is there enough memory and processing power?
4. are there unnecessary scripts running in the background?
5. any hanging processors or zombies?
6. too many guests clogging the system? I know this one can't be restricted as we want to encourage people but it does seem that once the guest levels get higher the vine slows.

(before anyone thinks I took a smart pill, this is all from Madmax who is used to running servers for mobile telecomms networks and had similar issues to resolve)

Well Shirley, I didn't understand a word of that, but I will consider it!
Giving up now and going to bed, hopefully it will be sorted by tomorrow night

I had problems logging on - and now it's going like a snail. About to give up as I don't have that kind of patience.

I have found the forum really slow for the last week or so and it did put me off replying to queries etc but tonight I seem to be okay. I just put it down to the ever expanding number of members and guests.

Its still point 6 that gets me Shirl. 'Guests' are apparently mainly search engines rather than the implied prospective members. It is truly irritating on some nights though.

Well, I suppose we must accept on 'Grow your own' website there maybe hoards of spotty teenagers googling about wanting to buy dope seeds or a bong.

It is all a bit sad really, I usually just lurk and read threads, but along the way I get the idea that alot of the regular posters and regular users of the site are getting quite irritated by the slowness of the site and I am afraid that if the site owners/maintainers are not careful, they will lose their most important members, the members that so frequently offer advice to all (old and new members). I don't make a huge noise on the site, but I do visit daily to see the new posts, and I do read all of the information on offer. If the site does not upgrade and move on, the people who use it will!

Sad, Sad, Sad, but hey.....I can move to wherever the majority of posters who offer invaluable information to me and many others move to......GYO need to realise and deal with the fact that there are many new users and they need a bigger/better server to deal with the many people who pay for the magazine and fund this site, I am one of those myself.

It is not a tricky subject, all within GYO's reach, so please respect your regular buyers of the magazine and users of the site and make the forum more user friendly.

x

Yes, it's now getting seriously annoying. You know the song "It takes all night to do what you used to do all night" - I'm losing the will to live!

When we first got the fancy new site with the pretty graphics it seemed OK. But now it's really SLOW!!!!! Help please, administrators, or do we have to email you about the problems? last time I emailed an administrator about the speed, I got asked questions about exactly when it was slow, so I gave up (like all the time, don't you actually use the site?)

Ok, just to add my bit...... In case anyones ( cough cough webmaster ) is watching.

original img size My size
Logo ( 20 kb ) Logo ( 12 kb )
Top Img ( 44 kb ) Top Img ( 24 kb )
Ad img ( 52 kb!! ) Ad Img ( 28.4 kb )

Theres really not a lot of quality loss that people are going to moan about to be honest.

Also, use external styles ( right click view source if you don't know people ) this is the code which created the page. Without boring you with technical jargon, theres a lot of un-neccessary code.
