  • Who did it for you?

Just watched BBC2, how Britain got the gardening bug (on IPLayer)

Percy Thrower, Peter Seabrook, Geoff Hamilton, Monty Don, Diarmuid Gavin, Charlie Dimmock, Alan Titchmarsh, Joe Swift, Carol Klein and others

It seems we have warmed to most of these gardeners !

    Any favourites?

No, it was Tommy Walsh in GF, handy Andy was in one of the daytime makeover programmes I think.

Loved GF too. Tommy Walsh did more for me than Alan though, but the guy who makes my knees go weak is Monty. I just love him. Was devastated when he left GW. But not to worry, I have him recorded on my bedroom PC so I can watch him whenever I like!!
A good beginning is half the work.

I don't think it was anyone on telly who got me growing my own. We had a knackered patch of grass down the bottom of the garden that needed digging over and, as we have plenty of lawn space anyway, I put some veg (can't remember what) in there instead of regrassing it. Then the new neighbours gave me the greenhouse that the old neighbours left behind and I've not stopped since

As for telly, my favourite is HFW, I don't agree with some of his preaching (we can't all afford free range chicken all of the time), but he is pretty inspiring and living the life I can only dream of. He always manages to take the oddest things and somehow makes them work (though his elderflower champagne recipe did almost blow up my shed). I always feel hungry after watching an episode of River Cottage (and I really want a couple of pigs)

After that it's things like Victorian Farm and Carol Klein's How to Grow Veg series and The Allotment with Jane Moore and that other fella who I can never remember

Never been one for GW, never enough about veg in it for me and they always seem to present it as though everyone has a never ending supply of John Innes whatever and mountains of well rotted manure.

I've always had an interest in gardening, mainly from an armchair to be honest. What really got me going was this forum. When i first logged on i asked about container gardening because of my back and hips.Since then, reading different posts i have started in a much bigger way.My back and hips are troublesome but i can actually do much more than i'd ever imagined.I have started to lose weight and my blood sugars have improved the garden looks great.Love the gardeners world programme but you lot with your expertese are what does it for me

In a bizarre way, it was probably Jamie Oliver, Mary Berry, HFW and Bush Tucker Man that got me into gardening. I love the idea of growing what you eat and am getting more and more into eating the stuff which grows naturally - dandelion tea is very nice and the tea strainer filters out the insects nicely.

Well I must be older than the rest of you! I already grew veg (my dad did so I followed on) but I really loved Geoffrey Smith and Mr Smith's Vegetable Garden - on TV in black and white in the Olden Days. Later it was the inspiratonal Geoff Hamilton.

Gone right off GW these days - too much 'fur coat and no knickers' for me.

I grew up watching gardeners world, my Dad was a gardener, so I guess it was drummed into me from an early age. I actually quite like Rachel de Thame, I know she's a bit glam, but she also comes across as down to earth. I was never so keen on Alan T on the telly, although my Dad worked with him at Kew and I liked him in real life.

Does anyone remember Bob Flowerdew on GW? I was trying to describe an episode I saw to OH where he gave his shed a face, and OH is now convinced I am loopy. (Nothing new there then!)

I loved Geoff Hamilton, still reference his books, he had some great ideas for making stuff like crop protection and compost bins.

I remember watching Percy Thrower with my Gramps and to be honest being bored silly, but then I was rather young at the time. My own personal favourite was Geoff Hamilton. I loathed Ground Force, that wasn't a gardening programme, that was construction.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
