  • Well done Joanna Lumley!

Loved her as Purdey in the New Avengers, loved her as Patsy in Ab Fab, now love what she's doing for the Ghurkas.

Tch. You forgot to say that you loved her as a bond girl.
Think she's doing a great job of kicking the government up the rear. Maybe we could campaign for JL as PM?!!?

I agree. Thought her comments following her meeting with Gordon Brown were very clever.

She may not have won the campaign, this snidey government will backslide out of any situation.

What Joanna has done is demonstrate to Gordon Brown and his band of greedy, snout in trough supporters, that what he is doing to the ghurkas is against public opinion. They have massive public support. Simply, the public want to see 'fair play'.

Something this government knows nothing about.

                  Good question NOG.

Personally, if I was quite a few years younger I'd be out of this country like a shot.

I was very partial to Ms Lumley in the first ever (I think) Red Nose day, when to fill a gap, she offered to get her kit off for a few quid.
They want to live in the UK because after 22 years in it, its somewhere a lot of them know better than their own homelands, and because, in general, the standards of living, health, education etc etc are better than in Nepal. After having given the best years of their lives in the service of the crown, they surely should be entitled to those things for themselves and their families.
I know immigration of any sort can be a contentious issue, but I truly believe that there should be a case for these particular foreigners to be allowed to stay.
I havent seen what JL has been doing, as I dont have UK telly, but she is certainly championning a cause I heartily believe in.

I believe I am correct in saying that these guys paid tax to our government whilst they were laying down their lives for us - no brainer really is it

She's making the Ministers look stupid and is running circles round the Government in the UK. Good for her. Still, if they pay the Ghurkas they wont be able to buy bath plugs for Jacqui Smith's second house - or is it first house - in her constituency.

But then all the MPs are only abiding by the rules - that they set themselves and have refused to change on several occassions.

i find it quite sad that no-one (press, MP's etc) was particulary bothered about until a celeb gets involved, still if it the end result is that they win the right to stay then it's a good job, I have previously trained with some Ghurkas and I have the utmost respect for them, totally professional, brave, humble and very tough people.

That wouldn't surprise me, Pikie (). Forgot to mention that JL was also in Lovejoy series 3, but I didn't like her in that. I was jealous!

Sad as it is, it sometimes does need someone high profile to attract the media. If I were to go and tie myself to Downing Street Railings, I would just be carted off in the Funny Farm waggon.
