  • Ummm....Can you work out this puzzle?!

This has twisted my melon for a few days now....it's probably very simple, but...I cannae do it!

It's a grade I received for an assignment.

Part A was worth 75% and Part B worth 5%.

The grades go from 8 to 19.

The final grade would be worked out by dividing Part A's grade with Part B's to a ratio of 75%:25%.

    The final grade was 16.8.

So, what was the grade for each part?

    (i.e. if part A was a grade 18 and Part B was 16 and they were worth 50% each I'd get 17)

    I haven't explained this well, have I?!?!?!

So you've got an assignment which is marked with different weighting, but the overall grade is 16.8?, or 16 and 8?

        Since the ration is 75/25% it is 3quarters and 1 quarter - or 4 quarters. So divide 16.8 by 4 = 4.2
Multiply that by 3 = 12.6 for the first part and 1 for the 2 part = 4.2.
But that doesn't make sense either

Assuming .."Part A was worth 75% and Part B worth 5%."
Should read Part A was worth 75% and Part B worth 25%.

          Then ......

          Part A is worth . 12.6
          Part B is worth .. 4.2

          Giving total grade16.8

          Simple math 75% + 25% = 100% .... 25% expressed as a fraction is 1/4 .. therefore divide final answer by 4 that will be B then multiply that by 3 to get A

Can't be done! You don't have enough information. You know that 0.75(part A grade) + 0.25(part B grade) = 16.8. That gives you an equation with two unknowns, which doesn't have a unique solution.

Knowing that the grades can be between 8 and 19 lets you figure out a range of possible values - you must have received between 16 and 19 for part A and between 10 and 19 for part B. For example, if you had 12 on part B you'd have 18 on part A, but you could also have 19 on part B and 16 on part A.

I hope that helps and doesn't confuse you further!

That's not right as the grades range from 8 to 19 so it's not just a case of adding it up like that - will have a think and get back to you

Sorry, this was aimed at the posts which said you'd got less than 8 in one of the segments not at the post directly above

OK, I'm with Eirish on this one, you don't have enough info but you can limit it down to one of these combinations:

                    16 for A and 19 for B or
                    17 for A and 16 for B or
                    18 for A and 13 for B or
                    19 for A and 10 for B

                    Whichever one, you did well
