I know a few people on here use it. Linux is totally new to me. Seems like a good idea but could do with some help. So far got it working ok but problems with receiving Email. Hints/tips/links would be useful. Been wading through help online for hours and need some direction from established users. Anyone interested?

Our son has some knowledge of these systems I will ask him to come on line Or I can get him to PM you to see what problems you are having.

PS No1 son bought me a nice Ubuntu T-shirt(the one with the heron on it) for Christmas.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

      Hi Terrier

What email client are you using.............I use Webmail with Google no probs.

For your info I have tried Ubuntu, have still got it on my system as a dual boot option.

I got everything to work but just can't stand the screen for to long, it seems to have to much contrast. I followed loads of Hints/tips/links only to find others with the same problem.

Its something to do with the graphics and what ever you do to your PC dosen't seem to help.
Shame because I really liked it.

A very good tip from one of the forums was Try it from a Live CD for 2 weeks before deciding.

Two things are bugging me at the moment. First is passwords. It seems everything is controlled by passwords. No matter which Email I use, it asks me for a password to receive mail but I havn't set a password, if I use my login it comes back as wrong password. The other thing is how do you get to your email account, in windoze it's under tools but it's not there in Ubuntu/Linux.
I know what you mean INGU (inearlygaveup ) about the screen colours and contrast, it is a bit stark, I'm working on that one. It's a lot faster than windoze but there's a lot to learn and I'm still experimenting.

You must have had a password to set your email account up originally. I take it that you probably use outlook.

If you have forgotten your password you usually have an option where you can say you've forgotten and they will email it to you, or allow you to reset it.

To set-up your email you go to applications, then office, then evolution.
You will need to know all your settings and enter them into the email account section that's found under edit > preferences.

If you want to play with Linux I would use Sabayon. It boots off a CD so you dont have to wipe your WinDoze off your PC. An runs in VM. When you are fedup with it just reboot.

Nog, I'm using a different hard disk for Ubuntu, so if I make a complete hash of it, I just swap disks and go back to windoze.
INGU, thanks for that, I've found the account section but still can't receive mail although I can send OK. More experimentaion required.
It should keep me out of mischief for a while anyway

Using the same POP settings as my windoze PC, If I use the password I use for the other PC I don't get the error warning about passwords not matching, but still can't receive mail! I'm looking for dedicated help forums if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Have you tried posting on this forum
Absolute Beginner Talk - Ubuntu Forums

But your email settings should remain the same in Windows or OS Ubuntu.
                        Check them all again.
Also check the status of your connection, the fault may be there are you sending and receiving.

Sort of. Ubuntu works great, much faster than Windoze but there's a lot to get used to and I'm learning as I go along. I've not been able to receive Emails but I can send them? I know it's something to do with the account settings but can't figure out what it is. As I don't intend to use this PC for Email it's not a problem at the moment but I'll have to have another furtle about. I use a lot of training software from work, I can't get it to run on my work laptop or our other PC running Vista, but on ubuntu it works fine. Crazy.
