  • Thass ma boy!

Bean has cut his second tooth now (and we suspect there are more not far behind), and we have been weening him for weeks now.

Some weeks ago we started giving him sticks of celery, pepper, carrot, cucumber to gum on, and more recently bread (made in our bread maker on loan from LW's parents).

Last week we decided (now that he was toothed up) to start trying him on the food we eat, so I cooked a risotto last Thursday and we saved him some for his lunch the next day. It was blitzed up, but unfortunately as I'd cooked the risotto with a bit of "bite" in the rice he wasn't too keen as it felt a bit lumpy I'm sure. Next time I'll leave a bit in the pan, add a little more stock and over-cook it for him.

Last night I made a bolognese, and saved him some to be cooked with his baby pasta. I made it as usual ("flavourtastic" as someone once commented) including capers, olives, red wine, oregano, balsamic vinegar etc - and was slightly worried that it may be too flavoured for him.

Well, I just received a text from LadyWayne stating, and I quote - "He's LOVING his spag bol!".

    Love 'im!

    Yeah, it's fine NOW.

Just wait until he gets to school and mixes with people who only eat chicken nuggets and chips....all your good work goes out the window as they become picky eaters because their friends don't like it they don't like it either........even though they ate buckets of the stuff before going to school.......

Don't - LW's Mum, and brother seem obsessed with buying him his first McDonalds.

Why can't they be as excited about buying him his first Wagamama's, or something similar like his first smoothie at Giraffe?

        Grrr!

We were at a family wedding last year and the mother of the bride was mortified when my Niece asked for a couple of happy meals for my great nephews

Well done though, keep it up Wayne. At least he won't be able to say he hasn't tried new things.

With a bit of luck he will refuse. My friends little girl won't eat anything that isn't a proper meal - even chocloate is refused by her infavour of fruit.
              Chocolate though - weird!

We're trying to get him having as many different flavours, textures, smells, colours etc in his first year - in the hope that it will give him a good grounding.

                  Keep at it HW,
we tried Charlie on all kinds of different foods when he was teeny, including Giraffe smoothies and Wagamama noodles and yes he loved them both ! I think I can fairly confidently say his diet now (aged 7) is much more varied than most of his friends and other than an inexplicable dislike for banana, he enjoys most things. If he is asked what take-out food he would like, his first choice is always Indian followed by Thai and I am pleased that McDonalds isnt even on his list - not in a snobby no-junk way, I just dont think they taste nice and would rather take him to GBK occasionally for a proper burger. He eats raw veg, herbs and spices, prefers home made to bought for almost anything. It can be done ! And it makes eating out and school dinners much easier too - some of his friends dont go to restaurants and have the same packed lunch every day as they wont try anything new. I like to think we have helped Charlie to enjoy a healthier and more interesting diet that will set him up for life.

Daisy used to turn her nose up at anything that didn't have garlic added!
If my two are anything to go by,yep unfortunately they do go through fussy fads with their food, but remember their taste buds are always changing.BUT,they're still pretty open to trying new things & a lot of the less desirable things just don't do it for them.
You're doing good & I believe it does help as they get older if they've been given lots of different tastes textures from the start.

I can remember when we were weaning Daisy,FIL would constantly get at us for not giving her a drop of "proper" gravy!(In his mind Bisto IS proper gravy!)
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Good lad, dontcha worry about him having his head turned by his mates, CB eats everything including fish and shellfish. Had some friends over for a bbq last night and their child (friend of CB) will only eat chicken (no salad) and then only the inside of chicken cause she doesn't like the crispy bits
