  • No Grounds for Gardening

    Hi!

Don't know if this is the right place, but did anybody catch (or record!) Joe Swift's programme? I recorded it but only got round to watching yesterday.

Vertical, container and roof gardens. I thought it was interesting, but would like a series giving more details of each. I especailly liked the garden in the van!

    What did other people think?

Yes I watched this, and what that French bloke had achieved on those walls was pretty amazing, but they did'nt actually show how they did it.
Mind you, if someone built that around here, the local yobs would pull it all to pieces within a few weeks.
The living roof idea, while not new has never really caught on with developers of new buildings and it would soak up a lot of the excees rainwater so I am all for it.

Gardening should always be a pleasure and never a chore, only someone forgot to tell the weeds

I enjoyed the program. I'd heard about the French fella before, there was a lot of 'hoo-ha' in the Landscaping trade press a couple of years ago. The plants are all planted individually in compost-filled pockets in the membrane. The membrane is irrigated, usually by a rainwater collection system (I think) and controlled nutrients. The structures are quite complicated, but I think the overall effect is wonderful. I'd guess that probably all the info is available on the net via a quick 'google.'

I was interested in the 'home-made' vertical unit. As I only have a verandah, up seems the way to go! I wonder if there are any plastic units that could be adapted? I'm not really that handy, but can't afford purpose-built.

I really enjoyed watching this, but anything like that round here would probably get 'yobbed'. Shame, as the displays were really stunning.

Yes, anything on ground level would probably be yobbed near me too. Fortunately, I've got a first floor verandah. It faces SW to West, so gets a fair bit of sun - well for Scotland anyway! Was thinking of growing up the wall under the window.

I was wondering last night if good old milk bottles could feature in it. Perhaps stapled together and framed? With holes in them to allow percolation?
